You are not understanding... it was a flash sale to raise capital. A very legit way to raise capital.

Ask anyone on this thread and they will tell you the same thing!

Do OTA send the money immediately? I thought there was some form of escrow till near flight date involved?

If you call into the customer service and you pick Mandarin instead of English, you get thru to someone a lot faster.

Some trivia over crazy J fares, feel free to add and/or correct.

This year I have seen 2 crazy J fares.

In June AM MIA-GRU around $450

Now HX LAX/SFO-PVG/BKK/DPS $600ish

Airlines known to honor the deals - AM, AV, NH, TK, WY

Airlines notorious for cancelling/not honoring - AF, AZ, ET

The list above doesn't include official flash sales, routine low J fares (such as SV).

as i'm sure you know already, airlines don't want to advertise significant savings as it causes price deflation and a cheapening of a brand in the eyes of leisure travellers.
it means people won't want to spend more in future if they know they can get it cheap in a well known sale. in retail this is common and happens with a number of shops which have frequent sales - when they don't have sales, people stop buying and just wait for the sale.
seeiing as they operate at 60% carrying capacity vs industry 80% average on the route, it doesn't seem implausible that they would want to push this number up, subtly.
VS and BA have similar sales typically out of continental europe.
however, the current business class sale for 1,000 from LHR to east coast US/Canada is actually a big saving compared to the normal prices. it's a reduction by 40-50%, and it actually looks like a competitive move against BA because it is out of LHR.

That.

Unlike UA and AA, J is not the full, unrestricted bucket on HX. They use C for that: C->D->J->Z->I.

BA. They even cancel legit sale fares if too many people buy them.

HU has C,D,Z,I,J. Are you confusing HU with HX? HX also has J.

When I look at expert flyer and understanding they are not the end all be all, for HU (Hainan), they have J listed as "business-award"

Okay but this is about Hong Kong Airlines (HX). Hainan owns part of HX but they are a different airline with different fare codes =\

can't disagree with that.
last time i flew they downgraded me from business into economy and told me there was nothing they could do (no comp).
then two people in front on boarding got free upgrades into business (to their surprise). i complained to BA and they don't even bother responding. can't get worse than this..
