Finding tons of availability from Europe, especially Italy including MXP and FCO. In fact, longer routing seems to make cheaper Ex: MXP-ATL-LAX or MXP-ATL-JFK-LAX is cheaper then MXP-JFK or MXP-ATL. As I mentioned, found MXP-ATL-LAX-SAN-ATL-MXP for 345 all in, 13,848 miles.

Hmm... never thought of that but then don't you end up spending more total miles? I guess I don't totally understand it.

Would I do:
Award ticket MCO-LON (Friday night)
Paid cheap ticket: LON-SFO (Saturday day)
Paid cheap ticket: SFO-LON (Saturday night)
Award ticken LON-MCO (Sunday day)

That's a really great fare although quite possibly the worst time of the year for me to go. Is there something a little bit later? Perhaps in July?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, you spend more miles. But you receive lots more back, defend PE status etc. No time to rationalize the ins and outs on this - must book more of them while they're still here.

You can do:
TUS-LON (award), LON-US rtn, LON-US rtn, MAN-US rtn, EDI-US rtn, LON-US rtn., LON-TUS (award return). Over a nine month span. Or more. Why be modest?

This paid fare appears to be less than the taxes charged on a DL award ticket on the exact same flights with EU origination.

I could also book it to have a break between the segments (i.e. go LON-US on 1/1 but US-LON on 9/1 (depends on the fare rules)...

Ok ideas, ideas.

Exactly. As was stated, yes you burn some miles but your overall cost is low and your overall net gain is great.

I am doing an 11-day MR Jan 1-11 using three DXB-YYZ fares with SU from the mistake months ago and using a positioning flight from MN to DXB round trip. Just the miles I earn on the flights will be worth what I paid for the flights, figuring 2 cents/mile. Then I also get PE status for two years, free domestic upgrades, free award ticket changes (just saved $126 today on that by being able to take advantage of the elimination of the fuel surcharge on award tickets), great service from NW's PE people, etc.

Go for it but calculate the cost/benefit. I did a spreadsheet and saw there was no reason not to do it.

Hmm... let's see if I can work this into a multi-weekend MR and not have my boss pissed at me (unfortunately small office so I can't just run away without asking/telling).

You still need a city near you that qualifies for the great fare to be able to string this out. No such luck here for the surrounding CVG area. Can get reasonable fares UK-DAY/CMH/SDF/LEX/IND but nothing worth multiple cycles. Still maybe a one time shot if the fares to the UK get sub $550. That's a gamble you have to take.
