AF/KL is already not my airline of choice for long haul flights, just for intra-EU travel. I might have accepted a change of the ticket to business class if they would have proposed or even called me, perhaps a way to gain a new long haul customer. Now I am not even sure I want to use them anymore, even for short haul flights. The lack of customer service here is just astonishing in my opinion. I actually wonder how many people have made a booking of this "mistake fare". I guess we are not talking about thousands...
Also got an AF cancellation email + 10K points as goodwill. I am a flyingblue platinum member. That is very generous of them :-)
I don't get the comments on "defending airlines". Nobody is defending the airline - AF is operating within the law. They are explicitly allowed to cancel these fares. Protest the law, not the airline. I like that tit-for-tat rule - airlines should have the same cancellation window that passengers do. Let's try to make that happen.

Btw I still haven't received any call or mail from AF despite ticket being cancelled. Not a big deal but I would love to get the 10k FB (Platinum here as well).

I just got a call about 15 minutes ago (9:50 pm Pacific) from a Dutch number and assumed it was them as people reported in earlier replies. I let it go to voicemail since it's clear it's just a courtesy notification but they didn't leave a message.

I got a call about an hour ago from Amsterdam with an apology for the cancellation, told the rep it was fine (and expected) but my $1900 in prepaid hotels in London and Manchester is on AF now. The rep said we'll refund you in 2 weeks.
Wished him a good day and hung up.

On a positive note this cancellation allows me to change my "rushed" travel plans to England, I can afford paid J but when you see $1.5K for F in AF you don't think twice so I jumped onboard the now sinking ship.
I'd be concerned if I were due to travel sometime this month or early next year, I am not due to travel to England till March.

The two bookings now appear on my amex account (based in France). Let's see now how much time it will take to those guys to issue a refund. DOT rule states 7 days right ?

Yes, I will maybe will but using different channels of booking. One think I won't do though is book a ticket on AF for a long-haul trip in a premium cabin if their price is in line with the competition. I am more tempted to book on airlines which showed some flexibility with me or some friends in the past. AF is not on that list.

Yes. The DOT does not require them to honor them at all, regardless of who's flown on one before or not.
It depends on who's issued the ticket - the earning rates are different when you're flying on AF metal with a DL issued ticket. In this case, you'd know depending on the number your ticket starts with: DL == 006, AF == 056.
If DL issues the ticket, the mileage earning works based on their charts, and not the AF partner fare.
There are three things that matter: Marketing Carrier (the flight number, i.e. AF123 vs DL123), the ticketing carrier (006 ticket vs 057 ticket) and the operating carrier (i.e. who's plane is it).
In this case, regardless of where you booked, AF is the operating carrier. Depending on where you booked, it could be an 006 ticket with DL flight numbers, or an 057 ticket with AF flight numbers. If you want to earn Sky Miles, the AF ticket is what you want, as the partner earning rates are more generous compared to a DL ticket.
Sorry, that's confusing, I hope I typed that out right.

Update: I received a call from Air France saying they had a technical error and have canceled the flights. I told the CSR I found that unacceptable as if I missed a flight or anything against the Contract of Carriage they would be happy to charge me for the trouble. I asked to be called back by a senior CSR person, and of course no calls to date.
