I'm nearly positive that if you attempt to skip the first YVR-SFO leg, the rest of your itinerary will be cancelled, and I strongly doubt NH will be sympathetic to reinstate it.

Thanks, that is what I'm worried about. I wouldn't want to give them any reason to cancel or re-price the ticket.

Also, has anyone requested J to F upgrade using ANA miles? I'm waitlisted and not sure what the chances of it clearing are. I don't want to move 40k miles speculatively and have miles stuck in program I don't use much. Just wondering if it clears and miles are not available, will it flag(allowing me to add miles) or just move on to next in line? Thanks.
There is zero chance that works out for you. If you don't fly your first segment, the rest of your itinerary will be automatically cancelled.

UA offered me a refund due to the equipment change. I declined, because I wanted to reroute, but the offer was there.

Well, if I were them, I wouldn't let people cancel for free. The last thing they want is for people to have no hesitation before booking mistake fares, knowing that it's free to cancel later.

On the other hand, I've booked mistake fares before (though this was on BA) and they're usually MORE lenient with cancellations for those because they can re-sell the seat for more (e.g. the APPROPRIATE) amount of money again instead of the "loss" they're taking by honoring the mistake fare.

Yeah, both sides definitely make sense.

My attitude is book every mistake, and figure out within 24 hours if I want it. But I would have no expectation of free cancellation after that.

UPDATE : for 350.00$ ANA has been able to change my return flight. So no need for me to CX the booking
They told me that as long as the fare class is the same there is just a few of 350$.

My fare rule is the following:
CA$450 change fee + fare difference
CA$500 refund fee

How did you get them to waive fare difference and only pay $350?
