Original premium fare deal was for QR J class travel, originating in Vietnam (SGN and HAN) to several destinations across the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Travel period 8/2017 - 3/2018 inclusive, RT fares in the USD 500 - 700 range (USD $0.05 base fare).
Reports have now been circulating that all held, non-purchased fares have been canceled by the airline. Some held and then purchased fares were also canceled, but several reports indicate at least some of those have been re-instated.

I think it's a coin toss for us non status folks were to credit. I think I'm going to do BA (and fly 4 cheapies after that).
Rationale:
AA
Don't really need ~20k AA miles
Gold status doesn't really get you anything other than economy extra which is the advantage here. (Don't need bags because I have the credit card and don't care about priority boarding)
MQD can be tough to get to plat where I'd want to be
BA:
I can def use the avios miles somewhere
OW Sapphire is big IMO because it gives lounge access to lounges us non status folks can't get inside normally.
Can BA golds choose better seats on partner airlines??

Yes but sometimes. On AA BA Golds get to choose Main Cabin Extra, but I think Silvers do too
On LATAM BA Golds get a pick of row 1ABC, silvers weirdly get 1DEF and the whole of rows 2 through 5
On IB BA Golds no longer get preferential seat selection for the cheapest Y tix, that has been my experience MAN MAD and BRU MAD this year.
I don't know about other airlines because I am normally in J anyway but for the above its a worthwhile benefit.
Big perk of BA Silver or Gold is you get lounge access on US domestic flights. Flagship lounge at LAX and the dated but quieter Premium Lounge at MIA are two of my regular haunts.

In regards to crediting, if starting from scratch on both AA and BA...
It seems like I will earn
Should i default to BA in this case? I actually usually fly partners with these airlines in SE Asia and it would be great to get access to partner lounges if i do indeed earn oneworld sapphire.
It seems like I will earn
- 600 tier points for BA - Silver (And oneworld sapphire?)
- 20868 Miles towards AA - Not enough for Gold

I agree about the insane BA YQ on BA metal, but one of my friends was sharing with me that Avios is quite a good deal for short-hauls on partner metal, e.g. intra-Japan, so there can be some use to it. Starting at 4,500, that's about 4 short-haul flights.

has anyone booked their position flights yet? too early? costs?
do you guys think that two hours between when i land in HAN to when i take off from HAN to go on this run is too little time to go through customs?

not from what i understand, and on the BA site it says, "You'll need to fly BA at least four times and earn 600 Tier Points, or take a total of 50 BA flights, to move through to the Silver tier."

Indeed each and every program has their benefits.
If you want lounge access (due to frequent travel in Y or domestic flying in US), extra baggage, then BA offers the fastest route to Sapphire provided you can make 4 sectors with them annually. RFS/short haul intra asia redemption last minute is quite useful too.
But for me, I look for long haul redemption. Intra asia on short sectors I'm happy with LCC. I do long-haul J a few times a year but usually favour the best deal regardless of alliance. So AA for me is just a mileage pooling spot, with no mileage expiry (provided you just have some account activity) until I have enough to redeem.
Believe it's 2 for Bronze. 4 for silver and above.
As an alternative, their discount cash fares go for about 90USD all in one way.
I did look through some budget/LCC options from some of the bigger gateways in S.E.A. Bearing in mind that HAN airport is quite far from downtown, I'd be keen to avoid an overnight in HAN.
From HKG you have jetstar that arrives in HAN at 1430. Quite ideal for the 1730 departure. But you will need to overnight going back.
From KUL/SIN, you have budget flights arriving between noon and 2pm. Quite ideal again for the 1730 departure, but you will need to overnight going back. There is a 1845 departure to SIN from HAN, but that's very overpriced on SilkAir.
For BKK/SGN, lots of options. SGN-HAN domestics run about 40-60USD, and the HAN-BKK flights anywhere from 50-80USD.
The conclusion for me was, its okay to fly in from HKG/SIN/KUL/SGN/BKK but going back it's best to fly out to BKK/SGN to avoid the overnight.
From Europe, I see SU is flying to HAN and the one-way fares seem to be as low as 310EUR from some German Ports. For the adventurous, it seems UIA is happy to bring you to BKK for a little as 220EUR one-way on their 2-4-2 configured 767.
I am tempted to do a direct turn on QR from BKK, but it does seem a little tight. Wonder if anyone has any experience with that? Only been to the old Int'l terminal. No idea how the new one is set-up.
Indeed Intra-Japan can be quite a deal. But for me, I don't frequent Japan anymore. When I was there though, I preferred the train as travel was confined to TYO-OSAKA.

I am SIN-based, too, and crediting to AA, because I'll be Explat by the time I take these flights. 2.2 x 23,000 BIS = ~50,000 RDM makes it a no brainer for me.

I am looking forward to hearing success stories of this fantastic deal. I managed to book 3 returns from SGN in January. It does appear that Qatar will be honouring them. I booked a few of Alitalia a few months ago and that was a nightmare getting them refunded!
I think there were some people who were due to go soon, cant wait to hear that they arrived back safe

My info for the wiki:
8/26 HAN-PHL; 8/28 PHL-HAN (ticketed, cc charge went through)
positioning flight TBD. thought i was going to give up my plat status this year (0 EQM on AA to date), but here we are. thinking either of getting to europe for a cheap AY J fare to BKK, or SFO-HKG on CX PE. There's also a reasonably priced PE on JL for BOS-HAN, which would be the easiest.

For anyone who have paid for the booking but received no e-ticket, I don't think there's any luck now. My emails to them got no replies for three days so I managed to call them today. They kept insisting that since there's no ticket generated they will not reinstate the booking and the payment will be refunded. (Three agents always gave me different stories. One said it was already refunded on the 31st, one said it was already refunded on the 3rd, one said it wasn't processed yet and asked if I like to do it now.)
One interesting point: My booking was for SGN-DOH-JFK rt and it costs USD 672.78. One phone agent said that doesn't even cover all taxes and surcharges. I tried to make a booking today for the same route/date to see if it is true, and it seems all taxes and surcharges should be around USD 710. Indeed Departure Transportation Tax (USAP) and Arrival Transportation Tax (USAP) were missing from my quote. Of course my offer to pay the difference got refused. However if you have bookings for the same route and your price is around the same as mine, there may be some hiccups in the way.
