Just change the dates in Google Flights. Previous post links are active and working. Click the Orbitz link to purchase, not the airlines. Even if it's >$800, Orbitz is pricing it around $148 ow SYD-LAX. Then book. Voila!

If you're having difficulty locating flights, there are either no discounted tickets available on Orbitz for your date or you aren't understanding the search properly.
On google flights, a search for SYD-LAX one way on 9/5 shows that the cheapest ticket is $687 on China Airlines. Not very impressive and certainly not the Virgin deal you're looking for. You'll see Virgin prices at $842 for the 9:50am flight. Click on this flight. You will then see it reprice to $149 on Orbitz. (http://goo.gl/flights/2z92)
If you get to this point, great! Click to book on Orbitz. The purchase page pulls up just fine for me.
However, not all dates are available even if they show the $149 price on google flights. For example, 11/14 SYD-LAX shows as $149, but when you click through to Orbitz, Orbitz says no flights are found. This means this date is not available. You can keep trying with different dates to see if anything works. (http://goo.gl/flights/CCB3)

I don’t think this is true. If you search directly on Orbitz and pick the right dates Orbitz will show you the high price, but once you select the flights Orbitz will give you a ‘Good news! The price of your flight has dropped $xxx dollars’ message.

hmm.... my assigned seat is no longer assigned, fare rules not available and fare not eligible to make online changes (reselect a seat). my seat was assigned on VA.com previously.
over/under on these avoiding the axe... 50/50? i did see $470 (or something like that) 1 way on NZ in the fall- so there are some existing low fares. that said, a far cry from $149

fare class / fare rules
I wasn't able to pull up fare rules on VA's site with my PNR/record locator.
Does any one know what fare codes the ticket booked into?
It says to call them for information, but I know that's not a good idea

Mine booked into T which, according to Delta's mileage chart is 100% MQMs but 50% RDMs. And just 10% MQDs.
