Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:
$120 R/T to SIN
$175 R/T to HKG or 7500 Avios
Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

Were you not in those very shoes years ago? Many of us are not seasoned travelers and use FT as we trust the information we get. Yes, we can look all throughout Google and find answers, but many of those are outdated and contradict each other.

I asked my question earlier as it seemed that people were doing the same-- asking about whatever related to this trip. Other members were more than happy to answer the same question over and over- even I was answering questions even when the answer was on a previous page. I know not everyone enjoys being helpful and taking their time to help inexperienced travelers, but being abrasive towards people who are new doesn't seem like it's the way to go.

That's the plan!

I feel like the whole of FT is like this; filled to the brim with pointless posts. It's just that there's also this useful knowledge floating around, if you're willing to sift through all the junk posts.

Also, I'm actually ORD-DUB-AUH-MAN-ORD Oct 22 - 29.

Me thinks the post is far from pointless.

One may be able to get 100% mileage accrual on korean skypass with the "E" fare Etihad ticket that most of us hold. Korean has some sweet spots on their award chart including 30K to hawaii. You will be halfway there with USA-AUH RT
http://loyaltylobby.com/2013/07/30/e...tion-released/

However, on Korean's website, it is quite the contrary. Any thoughts?

Other members were more than happy to answer the same question over and over- even I was answering questions even when the answer was on a previous page. I know not everyone enjoys being helpful and taking their time to help inexperienced travelers, but being abrasive towards people who are new doesn't seem like it's the way to go.

No actually. I was never in those shoes. I always started with Google or an airport's website or an airline's website. Then if I still couldn't find the answer, I would use the search tool on this site.

But a lot of that is also because Flyertalk has changed substantially over the years by several blogs that make up terms like "travel hacking" and encourage every Tom dick and Harry to sign up for 8 credit cards. When it comes time to redeem miles, they come on here and ask people to figure it out for them. I've never had the gumption to do that.

I've never flown Etihad before; I've never been to the UAE before. But common sense and initiative to do a little legwork on your own can reveal the answer to many obvious questions. At the least it can show you the proper place to ask a question .

This thread has been particularly absurd. There have been many mistake deals discussed on flyertalk before. Few have resulted in 100+ pages of people asking basic questions that are essentially "how does international air travel work?"

If I'm new to a community, I take the time to learn the norms of that community before jumping in and asking people to figure everything out for me. Flyertalk is not a tutorial service. It's a community of travelers. If you need a tutorial, bother whoever it was that told you about this mistake fare. They're the ones making money off you - not flyertalkers.

However, on Korean's website, it is quite the contrary. Any thoughts?

E doesn't earn anything on Etihad anymore. There's a note about it on the chart in the very last row: "E,X : As of 2013.10.27 (Based on Boarding Date) - No Accrual".

You can look at this post for more details -- http://viewfromthewing.boardingarea....had-178-fares/

The most useful general partner for those of us without a lot of intra-Middle East flights is probably ANA. At least, that's what I am doing

P.S. If you bid up to a business class seat in advance (not an instant upgrade at the gate), I think your fare class changes. Not sure what it is but there are some where Korean gives 150% and ANA gives 125% so Korean may be better in that situation.

Any thoughts on Etihad's tiny economy carry on limits - 1 bag up to 7kg for international flights and no mention of an allowance for an additional laptop / purse / handbag

Hi all,
I just noticed today that etihad changed my ticket on my on 1/22. It looks like this happened to others here as well, but my destination is different, so I thought I'd post by info.
I have a JFK-CDG-AUH-HYD with stopovers in each. The last leg was operated by Jet Airways. On 1/22, etihad exchanged my ticket to switch the 9W flight to one of their own flights, one that departs 7 hours later. Strangely enough, I got no email or phone call like some of the others here...I just happened to log into virtuallythere.

I called them and they put it back to the way it was. He "offered" to further remove the AA flight to CDG by giving me a direct flight to AUH on etihad, as they are probably instructed to do by now. I declined, and he said he made a note that I'd prefer to go through cdg.
Booked through onetravel.

I like the useless wiki.
Not so much the useless snark.

Got a schedule change from ORB for JFK-JNB, minor outbound change, sadly nothing to avoid the 14hr overnight layover in AUH on the inbound.

Plan:leave airport and taxi to hotel overnight
thoughts/issues I might not be aware of? suggestions welcome thx

I booked through OneTravel, too, although not traveling until September. I'm relieved that the Etihad agent was able to just make the changes the self versus send you back tot the travel agent (in those case OneTravel) as so many other airlines do.

Hello gorgeous
I assume you mean ORD and are not flying through Sweden. It would be helpful if you have more specific questions. Otherwise you may want to do a search on Google and flyertalk for "overnight layover in AUH" as many people have done it before and they are unlikely to be on this thread dominated by "noobs". There are also many threads already covering this topic, particularly in the Etihad forum. See eg

It seems to be very hit or miss-- some airports, like JFK, dont seem to weigh carryons often, others, such as IAD, seem to weigh more.

Make sure it doesn't exceed 111cms (max total dimensions).

As for purses, etc, make sure it fits in the seat in front of you (otherwise no size limits).

Seatguru mentions that a laptop bag, small purse, etc doesn't count as your carry on.

As long as you aren't bringing anything massive, you should be good to go.

By "Etihad's tiny ... carry on limits" I assume you mean "the carry on limit of most international airlines outside of America where people move house in their carry on bag"

ORB= Orbitz

Specifically, yes - any issues with my plan, as described. Thank you for the not so useless links.
