(Gone) US BOS-LIS: $10 fare + $289.50 tax

Last month, I bought the following ticket for travel on 6/28/14:
Boston>WashingtonNational>Philly>Lisbon

I didn't use miles, vouchers or promo codes.

Per my receipt:
Airfare $10
Taxes and facility fees $289.50.

Total paid: $299.50.

Why did US Air sell this? What is in it for them to send me and my bags around the east coast and then across the Atlantic Ocean for a measly $10?

Thanks

USAir Pricing rationale: $10 fare Boston>Lisbon + $289.50 tax

That's a nice price for the route and summer you realize that it's not really fees - they just call it that way - it mostly goes to US/AA.

I am presuming that the $10 was an error fare. Bet, you can't duplicate it.

It is still bookable for July 3/4 on Orbitz. We just posted about it. Maybe move this into Mileage Run?

Probably fuel surcharges (a.k.a. actually airfare), not taxes.

Not a fare error as YQ is a monstrous $258.

Those "taxes" are also part of the fare (in the form of an airline-imposed/airline-collected fuel surcharge).

All the airlines break their fares into "fare" and "surcharges". There are loads of times where the fare is cheaper than the surcharges. I know that the airlines pay a lower tax on their ancillary fees such as checked bags, and while I am not 100% certain, I believe the "surcharges" are also taxed at a lower rate than the base fare, meaning if the airline collects $10 fare and $289 in surcharges from you, they keep more profit by paying less income tax than if they had just charged you a $299 base fare from the get-go.

That said... nice fare for summer travel to Europe. I've always wanted to see Lisbon. So I might have to check this fare out!

This thread looks like a good candidate for the Mileage Run forum, which is where I'll send it (after I adjust the thread title to match that forum).

There's also availability this Friday, plus 7/18, and a few nights in August as well. Google flights calendar mode makes finding dates pretty easy.

Occasionally, this fare pops up in reverse. I'm not so sure it's a mistake, as it could be competition with SATA.

Not an error fare. You do realize it is one way? AA/US has had this route in the mid 600s rt for summer travel for a while now. Usually cheap on SATA as well.

Great one way fare but when you add the return flight, the total price triples to over $1000. How are you supposed to get back? Hmm ...
