base fare is abnormally low for this. YQ always seems to hover around $250-$300 for HKG bound flights from the US, much lower than others in the neighborhood.

Probably because DL is terminating SFO-NRT flights as of March 28 2014!

i too am curious as to whether a stopover at NRT is allowed. i tried to book a stopover using the Delta website but then the fair jumps to $1400. Does anyone know if there is a way to book a one or two day stopover in Tokyo and keep the $600 fare?

Not sure what you mean by US visa holder - depends on your passport. If you have a US passport, you don't need a visa to go to HK.

Fare rules: 2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT - 1 IN EACH
DIRECTION AT THE GATEWAY IN AREA 1 AT USD 100.00 EACH.

This seems to refer only to US stopovers. Someone else probably knows better than me.

Citizens of a lot of countries don't need a visa prior to reaching HK. You can get one on arrival. HK Visa Requirements

You can route SFO-MSP-NRT-HKG for $668, bringing it down to 3.5cpm. (Sample dates: 2/20-2/24)
