AA Status Challenge Jul - Oct

Lucky me, I got an unsolicited status challenge in the mail. 30K miles between Jul 1 and Oct 31 and I too can be an Ex Plat.

At this point, I have ~7K booked and will most likely have another ~3K soon, so, what's the best bank for my buck to get that last 20K?

Based in LAX (can also do ONT or SAN)

I was looking at LAX-LHR to enjoy the new 777 but could only get it to about 10 cents per mile...

Thanks in advance.

unbelievable! Why is AA doing everything in its power to alienate it's current elites by handing out unsolicited ExPlat challenges? God forbid they actually care about their customers that actually fly enough to earn status.

Only an incredibly small fraction of AA's elites would be aware of ExPlat challanges, so I doubt they are alienating the vast majority of their customers. I find AA is still caring v nicely for me. I might feel differently if not ExPlat....

Well, when someone is a UA silver and gets an EXP for flying what would normally barely qualify for AA Gold, I think that is a slap in the face of everyone who actually flew the requirements, be it Plats or EXPs. Try calling up and telling them that you won't be able to re-qualify this year and ask them to drop the requirements to 30k miles and see what they say. He also said it was unsolicited so someone actually took the time to find him and offer the challenge for free. Gold and Plat challenge aren't free anymore.

And, I didn't say it's alienating the vast majority of their customers, just the elites. ;)

Not that I need to defend myself to you, but, I have to imagine that the challenge came as I've been flying almost exclusively AA this year and will be hitting Gold on my next trip. I was only UA Silver for the past two years due to a job change which now is no longer the case.

That information is very interesting, thanks... I'm already AA Gold, and I tend to fly expensive fares based on last minute company travel. Most of that travel is on Delta though. I would definitely enjoy being targeted for an offer like this... but still haven't figured out the criteria. Luck perhaps? :)

LAX-NRT $930 on MH

I got an unsolicited mailing for a free Platinum challenge on AA for same period Jul-Oct 2013. I have 8 AA segments this year due to some CHI-DFW travel in January but only 8k lifetime miles. But I am DL gold and UA gold so clearly someone at AA figured out that I am a pretty profitable 'steal'. I'm considering doing the challenge - I switched from UA to DL because of the Amex platinum lounge access and AA offers that too - and I think it will be easier to hit this challenge than re-up either of my current golds due to a reduced work-related travel schedule.
Just have to find that mileage run to make it all worth it...
