newbie: First mileage run, help appreciated. [email protected]

I've been lurking around this forum for a couple of months. I currently dont have status with any airline, but since I had some time to kill the coming month, I thought of doing my first mileage run and seeing a new destination as well.

My home base is chicago.

I've been playing with matrix ita software and after some random searches, I see the following route being available. ORD-IST for about $542 at 4.8 cpm netting 11216 miles.

I was now wondering how do you guys figure out what stopovers you can add without significantly increasing the price or when do you choose coach vs first class. I picked Istanbul as that seemed the best cpm from chicago in february, but I'm not picky on where to go.

Sorry if this sounds pretty basic to you guys, but this is the first time at it. Hopefully if I can get any good at it, I can continue your tradition of helping others

looks like a vacation rather than a mr!....nothing wrong w/that, however, if you want to visit.....many people do....4.8 isn't bad....

Welcome to FT!

You need to take a look at the full fare rules when you're booking -- this is the pages of text that we all usually ignore when we're rushing to look at the price.

In there you'll find interesting text like "free stopover allowed in each direction in XYZ", that sort of thing. Services like ExpertFlyer, or the full text on ITA, can help. A little experimentation can help you spot possibilities too -- for example, what multi-stop itineraries does it suggest when you're searching? Especially at the same price point? Those are good places to start experimenting.

I don't think that Fare Rules will contain the Routing Rules. As mentioned upthread, you'll have to pay to be able to easily see routing rules. Expertflyer.com does offer a free 5 day trial.

I dont think that has the routing rules atleast not in the format of LAX-DEN/HOU/LAX/SFO-CHI/CLE/DEN/HOU-MKC for e.g.
