This is what I do, plus wear by Bose headphones, and a couple of Tylenol PM's. Even in Coach, the plane could crash and I would never know it.

I use melatonin, no caffiene, Bose headphones and sleep with a wet face mask, it keeps your face cool and moistens the dry cabin air. (I get mine when in Narita airport, come in packages of two and have a gel center that Gobbles up water and is just awesome, looks like a surgical mask) ,,,,,,,,, may look funny but it works, I just pull the blanket up over my head and have never had too much problem sleeping.

I can't sleep on planes because the passenger's screaming wakes me up.

For those who mentioned the prescription sleep drugs-ambien, prosome, dormicum-do any of you take it every night for sleep? If yes, do you have any side effects?

My 50 mg of diphenhydramine hydrochloride just doesn't seem to be working anymore.

Thanks for helping.

I don't know about the others, but it's definitely a bad idea to repeatedly take Ambien. Ambien (and many other sleep aids) are designed for short-term treatment of insomnia. Like many other drugs, they lose their effects over time (the same goes for anitbiotics, for example). Using Ambien once a month as a travel aid shouldn't cause any problems, but becoming reliant on it as a daily cure for insomnia is a recipe for disaster.

would hate to have to schlep to Tokyo airport to find them. as jerry says, and when i got to Narita and they didn't have them, i would say the heck with it and just go home....(soup nazi episode...bavarian cream donut...fight with "schmoopie", etc.).

One Benadryl (diphenhydromine) works for me at home, but I snore REALLY, REALLY loud and would be terrified of keeping the entire plane awake! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Ambien doesn't work for me, so my doc prescribed Halcion...it's an older med and may even be a generic by now. I can't sleep w/o the Biz Class pillow I kept from a previous trip...it's cushy and smushes flat in my computer bag. Also, try to max your chances of not having a seatmate by looking at a seat map when you book as well as before you go to airport. It may involve moving to the back of the plane, but having 2 or more seats to yourself is worth it.

Much better than an inflatable pillow is a soft cervical collar, the whiplash thingie. You will look funny sleeping in it, but it keeps those neck proprioceptors from waking you up (when you nod off--the pillow is not as good).

As for generic Halcion-Triazolam-great stuff, but such serious amnesia occurs in some folks that it can be mind numbing. I had a friend that was on call for obstetrics one night, and took it early in the evening when it looked like he could sleep. He got called in for a delivery which he accomplished flawlessly, made adequate notations in the patient's chart, then went home. Next day at the office asked his nurse if Mrs X (the patient from the night before) had gone into labor yet? Did not remember a thing. Moral of story, for newbies start with the 0.125mg dose. When you wake up, even if it is still in your system, you feel totally normal, but beware the amnesia is probably going to help you forget what you are doing!

On a flight from SFO to SIN with a 2hr stop in HNL (took the drug in SFO at boarding time), I wandered around the HNL terminal and felt perfect but had no idea I was waiting to get back on a plane. Would have missed it if it were not for some seat mates who organized a search party!

I-flybynight Jan 7, 2004 9:51 am

Since most of my flights are international I try to get a good nights sleep. Hence the name I-fly by night.

I have found over the years the best one is called "Stilnox". I buy it in Australia and NZ also in Europe, or if in S. Amercia, Eastern Europe you don't need a prescription.

No hangovers, full 5-7 hours sleep.
