Best to SIN?

A variety of airlines are offering SIN for about $600 out the door ex-LAX. Plus, more than a few are offering double miles and all-you-can-rake-in bonuses as well. So which is the best of the bunch in steerage?

It used to be lower ex-LAX.. something like in the $500's, taxes included. If this is strictly a mileage run and not a vacation, it might be worthwhile to look at weekly int'l e-fares.. and those would be double miles too. $600 seems like a lot, considering I'm paying $660 ex-BOS (Pacific route).

I think with UA now out of that market [SIN], fares will not soon again be as low as the $500 ex-ORD, etc. we saw a few months ago on their web site. Capacity is being reduced significantly over the Pacific, so the only thing to keep fares low will be a steep fall off of tourist traffic to SEAsia. The business market has already tanked.

But the tourism market may also be soft this winter. Afterall, the UA fare that was sold on the web was actually their inhouse consolidator fare which is used along with land packages. Low sales of such vacation packages left UA with lots of unsold seats in this fare category. That's why it was restricted to web bookings.

For the time being, as suggested, look into weekend web specials.

UA still serves SIN. They still have a LAX-SIN-LAX flight with a stopover in NRT each way. They stopped serving HKG-SIN-HKG.

I hope UA still serves SIN. I just purchased a ticket today SEA-NRT-SIN for next week. With double miles and low fares as well as the fact that I've never been to SIN, this was a great incentive. I just hope I get enough Ambien to take along on this trip http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

When are you going next week? My wife and I leave SEA for SIN next Friday.

Shinkansen Oct 6, 2001 8:26 pm

NW is running $545 RT LAX to SIN on its current fare sale (now to 12-15, 12-25 to March if I remember correctly, but buy by Oct 8th). I just paid $680 MSP to SIN (12-26 to 12-31).

PS Sorry about the "but buy by". It's late.

ldsant and SEA-Flyer, which weekend are you going? I'm going over on 10/19 and returning 10/21.

braslvr Oct 6, 2001 11:57 pm

Currently offered at $505 at ual.com. Various dates I checked in late Oct.
LAX-SIN that is.

We have two weeks coming up in SIN, Nov 1 to 15. What do you plan to do for a week in SIN? We wanted to go to Malaysia but are concerned about terrorists there. Two weeks just in SIN seems like a lot.

2 weeks is definitely lot down there. I say give yourself 3 days. You may want to go to nearby countries like BKK where your dollar will stretch further. Malaysia is a good place to visit. Go with a tour group might be a safer option.

Thanks for all the replies. I just got back, and went with United. No problems at all, Changi is still amazingly fast to get through although you'll see plenty of machine guns now. There is no more Singapore departure tax. For what it's worth, my Singapore friends all discouraged me from going to Bali and Malaysia. I knew about Indonesia but apparently all is not smooth sailing in Malaysia.

I have a friend in KL (Kuala Lumpur) and he doesn't report it to be hostile and anti-US there.. however, it is important to note that the eastern coast of the peninsula is more conservative than the western side. If you stick to major touristy cities like KL and Penang/JB, then I'm sure visiting will be harmless.

1K-SFO, three of us, Essxjay, Onefreeman and myself are doing the SIN run, leaving SFO on the 18th and returning on the 21st. I'll be returning SIN-NRT-SEA while the other 2 are flying back via Honolulu for a couple of days in the sun. I'll be staying at the Sheraton and Essxjay will be at the Conrad. Let us know so we can hook up in SIN.
