My first INTERNATIONAL mileage run

I have to be in LA in March for a convention. The r/t fare from JFK is $475.

I Have an extra day and was looking to do a run say maybe LAX?LHR. That's pricing out at $550. Hmm. What about LAX/SIN? Isn't SIN the favorite destination of all UA mileage runners? This too priced out at about $900 from JFK with a stop in LA.

So I tried and am flying the following:

10 March UA #1 JFK / LAX 7:05 am
10 March UA #1 LAX / HKG 11:50 am

12 March UA #2 HKG / LAX 12:25 pm
12 March UA #18 LAX / JFK 22:10 (redeye)

UA # 2 arrives in LA at 8:40 am. I have to walk a trade show that day. Then I'll head back to LAX for the flight home to JFK.

Anyone want to join me on all/part of the trip?

Best part......This priced out at $650 complete. AND I had a 15 % off coupon that took the price down to about $550. So basically I'm paying $75 more to fly from JFK/HKG that the NY/LA price of $475.

Let's see, that an extra 15,000 miles for an extra $75 dollars. Plus Premier Exec double miles. That works out to fractions of a cent per mile.

You guys created a monster. Thanks
Only problem is I'm sitting in the back. This fare is not upgradeable.

You may want to reconsider your flights on the way to HKG. Because you are booked on UA#1 they will screw you over the miles. You'll get 8067 miles for going to HKG (i.e. the non-stop distance) instead of 9722 for going JFK-LAX-HKG.
Why is the fare not upgradeable?

NYC1,

Oh my gosh. You're right. I booked the ticket but have a few weeks to pay for it.
I'll go to the ticket office tomorrow and change the routing. Maybe JFK/LAX LAX/SFO
SFO/HKG.
My return has a 14 hour stop in LA. I think that will be ok since I'm on 2 different flight #'s.

Thanks A
Dan

NYC1,

The upgradeable fare was over $900. And since I'm paying, it's a big $250 difference.

Wow! I just noticed that those cheap fares are V class, the first time I've seen anything below H on UA to Asia in a while.

You can stay on UA 0001 if you break JFK-HKG into JFK-LAX connecting to LAX-HKG. It is possible but a lot of agents don't have a clue. You'll just miss me by a day.

09-Mar UA JFK NRT
09-Mar UA NRT HKG

11-Mar UA HKG NRT
11-Mar UA NRT SFO
11-Mar UA SFO JFK
