AA: $250 RT to Tokyo ex PIT/DAY/STL/MIA/FLL [Oct to Mar Travel Period]

Hey guys,
So I was booked to fly this trip with AA in April. They have since cancelled my connecting flights to and from HND (via LAX). Since Japan is still closed for tourism I would like to change my flight dates to October. When I reached out to AA (multiples times via app chat or calling them) I was repeatedly told that since this was a Basic Economy fare that they would only change the dates to 24h before/after the original dates, even though it was an involuntary change/cancellation made by them. Are they allowed to do this? Can anyone advise on a strategy to circle that? I have never heard of this before (but I think this is the first time I get an Basic Economy fare from them).
