That`s a looong way in Economy....
Afterwards I`d need a few days to recover from that flight...
But it`s a good price

I'd any day pick one long flight over lots of short flights, though. But yes, a very(!) long way.
Luckily Ethiopian doesn't charge extra for allocation of emergency exit seats. Neither do they seem to care much about your physical size, rather distributed on a first-come-first-serve bases. (At least in Addis Ababa). So if you are showing up early at the check-in desk, you are very likely to be able to get one - free. Or if you contact an Ethiopian Airlines sales office they can also pre-allocate such a seat, free, if you sweet talk them a bit. Usually works for me.

My 25 year old self would have jumped at this. Don't think I have the mental stamina to handle it in Y these days

Same goes for me. I´ve been spoiled rotten by J and F. A few years earlier I would´ve taken this deal for getting *G on TK. But nowadays I get claustrophobic when the seat next to me isn´t free

That's a horrible price for TYO-LAX in coach.

This earns 75% redeemable and PQM in UA.

This isn't about the cost of NRT-LAX. It's about how many miles you can grab. That's the whole point of a MR

Oh dear. Just - wow. Do you know what a mileage run is?

I took the liberty of doing the math - if it truly does accrue at 75% PQM for UA, it's 3.2cpm. Great deal.

do you get the free hotel for that layover? or is there an earlier flight to lax. remember ethiopia requires visa from most countries, waived if you get the free hotel

this is also a very long way to go in ET Y: beer and wine only, and they run out often.

Use ITA Matrix to search for dates like shown here to find new date pairs.
It seems those particular dates are gone. But you can find availability on other dates. E.g. I found this - was also able to get it bookable on Expedia (though on the Japanese Expedia site) price at JPY 84,000. Quite a few options in e.g. Jan, Feb, March probably also other months.

Having done NRT-(HKG)-ADD-GRU a couple of times as a mileage run when all ET fares credited at 100% to UA, I absolutely do not envy anyone doing this run. LOL, it's a killer no matter what seat you chose. Having said that, it's a nice price. ET used to give us a lot of attractive long haul prices from NRT during their first 2 years of service but now they are gouging as badly as everyone else ex-Japan. Have to resort again to the miles to PVG/PEK/HKG/ICN first trick to get decent prices usually now.

Fair word of warning to anyone brave enough to try this, many of the folks who board during the HKG stopover aren't the most savvy of travelers and bang on the touch screen panels at full force to change video, volume, etc. I've wanted to take a bolt cutter to fingers many times on these flights.
