China Eastern JFK-PVG-SIN-PVG-JFK $463 (19628 MQMS / 2.35 CPM for Delta MQMs)

First time posting on here so apologies in advance for any etiquette mistakes... but I saw this China Eastern fare as I was looking for MRs to top me up for Delta Medallion this year. It's at about $200 cheaper than the flights on Delta Metal and I didn't see it mentioned before so I thought it'd be worth a post.

China Eastern (MU) earns at least 100% Delta MQMs on fares and the $463 is a T Economy fare. At approx 19,628 miles/MQMs, I believe the CPM is 2.35)

It's bookable on Expedia. Oct 24 - Oct 27.

You can also find the PVG-SIN-PVG segments in B Fare Class for an added MQM Bonus 😉

This is also available from other MU points of origin in the USA and to several other Asian destinations. Using HKG in place of SIN, for example, results in fewer MQM and increased CPM, but can compress the travel schedule by a day given MU's schedules.

I just flew multiple international segments on MU in J a couple weeks ago. It's an interesting experience. The ground crew are not at all helpful and outside of the US have minimal English ability. The air crew are very courteous but not very knowledgeable either. Be careful on connections, China's skies are constantly interrupted by military flights which are on the same routes and take priority. I read somewhere to have 3 hour connection buffers in China and I would tend to agree to be safe. I didn't have to deal with IRROPS but am not at all confident on how they would handle them.

That all being said, MU is a great value for DL MQM runs. Just be aware that it's not all smooth sailings.

Not quite as good but just booked SFO-TAO-PVG-SIN then SIN-PVG-SFO (17,166 total miles) on MU for $496 (Oct 17 return Oct 20). Arrive in the AM and leave just past midnight so will spend the day in Singapore.

Minimal or no MQD's on China Eastern flights in coach, correct??? So this would really be strictly for MQM's?

Incorrect. MU T fares earn 6% MQD's on miles flown (not actual spend). So a 20,000 mile MU T fare trip would earn 1200 MQD's.

You need to take into consideration that China Eastern often has delay, so same day turn around mileage run may turn into a nightmare.
Also, IMHO, long haul economy class on China Eastern is just awful. MR on MU is definitely a hard earn mileage.

Thanks for the advice. Had sort of been considering this deal, but I'm now leaning towards a VS PE run in the next year (I'm seeing some decent pricing to JNB). These will undoubtedly be more comfortable plus earn quite a few MQD's.

I just did JFK-PVG-DPS and back in Aug in MU economy with a 1 hr turnaround in DPS. I actually found it pretty comfortable. Better recline than I'm used to on US carriers, seats were a bit firm at first but seemed to soften up on the flight, or maybe it was my bum. Food was bland but I ordered gluten free so that may have contributed.

Had a hint of someone smoking for about 30 mins on the last leg back in row 60 something, I suspect it was an FA in their sleeping section.

I'd disagree on this. I flew JFK-PVG-NRT on MU last Nov for pleasure to Japan. The new 777 was comfy in coach. Plenty of recline. I easily slept when I wanted to. Food was decent. And at the back there are a few rows of just 2 seats. Perfect for a party of 6.

Sure the 747 or 777 on DL metal with C+ is better but I wouldn't say it was 'awful'.
