Ua - lax-sfo-hkg-gum-hnl-lax $430

Looking for a Guam flight and found this aggressive MR. Looks like it might be available for only these dates: Jan 5 - Jan 7. 2 hour TAT in Guam. Is this possible?

All UA hardware

This looks more like lax-hkg which allows a connection in gum.

I'm doing that run in October. Ask me later and I'll tell you how it went.

I'm surprised that UA will sell you a ticket from USA-HKG-USA in that outgoing sector. Isn't there some kind of law against Air Canada selling USA-CAN-USA?

That's a 1 hour connection in GUM. Arrival 6:35am, departure 7:35am. And since it's two different equip types then you know the GUM-HNL is not waiting for the HKG-GUM flight to arrive.

Pack a day pack and Swimwear. You will have to go through US custom so with a little luck you will miss connect. Beach day!

They usually (in my experience) hold the GUM-HNL flight for any slightly delayed connecting passengers since there is usually a larger buffer in place on the HNL side.

better not discuss that and other nuances of USA-HKG-GUM-USA routing in the open. as of March 2017, and hopefully now, this can be exploited well beyond the cheap fares for a quick MR

The cabotage laws don't work like that.

Air Canada could sell Canada to Canada with a connection in the US
United could sell US to US with a connection in Canada.

Now, while both of those are allowed, there are all sorts of operational reasons not to do so, obviously. Cabotage forbids foreign carriers from carrying domestic traffic:

Air Canada can't sell US to US with a connection in Canada
United can't sell Canada to Canada with a connection in the US

In this example it is ok for sale of LAX to Guam via HKG since it is an American carrier selling and operating it. If a foreign flagged carrier (such as All Nippon, Cathay) tried doing it, it would be a problem. Asiana got fined many years ago for selling tickets to Guam like this.

There are rare occasions where cabotage is allowed. After Ansett collapsed, United briefly had cabotage rights on SYD<->MEL. They were able to carry passengers on the segment who had no onward travel. I remember reading a trip reports from a FTer who took that segment by itself.

Are you suggesting that for instance United couldn't sell a YVR-HKG RT connecting in SFO both going and coming?

No, I'm not suggesting that. Generalized, the issue is that a carrier based in country A can't sell a ticket for travel between two points in country B. YVR and HKG are in different countries.
