Transportation options from HGH to Hangzhou city center or PVG. Please add your name and your itinerary if you are interested in meeting other fellow FTers.
1) Taxi to Hangzhou city center, about 100 RMB ($15) for the entire party, not per person, walking from international terminal to domestic terminal (i.e., right turn after you get outside of the international terminal building), you will see taxi queue.
2) Shuttle bus, 20 RMB ($3), to Wulinmen CAAC Ticket Office or East Railway Station Line (two most popular options). The waiting hall for the shuttle bus is at Gate 10 (you can purchase ticket at Gate 14, too) Arrival Hall, on the first floor of the terminal building. Further details, see https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cit...ation.htm#hang
3) Shuttle from Hangzhou city center to PVG, 110 RMB, 3.5 hours: a) Wulinmen Ticket Office Central Hangzhou to PVG: (5:30, 6:10, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00)
b) Hangzhou Dragon Sports Center to PVG, 110 RMB, (7:00, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00
). Further details, see https://traveladept.com/bus-pudong-hangzhou/
4) Train from Hangzhou East station to Shanghai Hongqiao; less than 100 RMB (~1 hr); then you can take Subway Line #2 to PVG, ~10 RMB and 2 hrs; or shuttle bus (Airport Line #1), about 1 hr, 30 RMB ($4.5), every 15 - 25 minutes. The Hangzhou East ticketing windows are located on 1st Floor, EAST Area of the station. Please allow 20-30 minutes for walking to 2nd floor departure, and security check. The frequency of Hangzhou-Hongqiao trains is as good as that of subways in many US cities.
5) Getting cash at HGH The international terminal at HGH (where you arrive) only has an exchange vendor with hefty fees that is open limited hours. However, the adjacent domestic terminal has a bank ATM. To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.
6 Getting TWOV without issues The advice is to print out your itinerary, hotel reservation, etc., to speed up the procedure at the entry point in China. At SFO, the check-in agents were clueless, so be prepared to get there very early and fight for your boarding passes. Please read the last few pages on this thread for first-hand experiences. Good luck. There is a thread on FT for further details. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/china...hread-231.html

ATM To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.

Travel information for Beijing and airport:
Beijing will have 2 hubs starting Sept 30,2019. PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) is original main hub and will continue for Star Alliance flights and Cathay Pacific (including subsidiary Cathay Dragon Air). PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport, will debut Sept 30, 2019)
planned for airlines of the SkyTeam alliance and One World Alliance (AA, BA, etc. except Cathay Pacific) will be relocated to the new airport. Most flyers taking advantage of this China OJ deal will continue fly through PEK. Some people who use positioning flights through Beijing using non-Star Alliance airlines need to make sure you are flying into PEK, or else need 2hr ground transportation from PKX to PEK.
PEK allows TWOV within 24hr to stay inside security zone airside. This is more convenient for immediate turn than Shanghai-PVG, which force all passengers to exit immigration and customs, then re-check in from land side, even if you have immediate turn within 24hr.

Also, were you able to find SFO-YYZ on UA metal, ideally with a connection in EWR or less ideally in IAD. Thanks again.
Is this available in 2019? I'm running a little low on vacation time this year, and would prefer to take it in 2019 instead if possible! Is there a way to search for cheap flight options for next year other than just trying each date one by one?

The island hop does not run every day. I think that it is only available for MWF. So, this reduces your search time.
I found a similar fare for $526 from IAD (can drop last segment to YUL/YYZ). It is not as great as a deal as last year, especially for needing HKG-PEK flight instead of a train ride from HGH to PVG. For experiencing the island hop, it may be worthy. Cheers!

But the runways can change direction depending on the winds, so it's still a gamble.

So I assume UA 155 is the island hopper. 14+ hours to go from Guam to Honolulu. What is the typical on-the-ground time on the islands? Can you get off? Looks like you can only pick a seat for the entire route, so how is it possible to change seats from flight to flight? I always do isle seats, but on this one I am inclined to get a window; advisable?

Less than one hour at each stop. You can get off at any of the stops to take a walk and buy souvenirs except at KWA, because it's a military base.

If booked as GUM-HNL in one segment with 5 stops, you can only choose a single seat for the whole journey. However, at T-24h, during check-in, you should be able to change seats on each separate leg.
I succeeded in asking an agent to split GUM-HNL into 6 different segments, but YMMV - most people were unsuccessful.

Upside if you split: you can chose different seats for each leg. Downside: economy plus is priced leg-by-leg and is more expensive (but you can buy economy plus only for the longest leg for a cheaper price).

As for aisle vs. window on this flight, I don't see why anyone would take this flight without a window seat. The window is literrally the only entertainment available during the 14 hours of flight.
That, and the looping DirecTV movies of course (if you enjoy watching the first hour of the same movie over and over again )

Thanks.

You called and split the leg into six segments way ahead or at T-24? I am elite, so no additional cost for E+, besides I believe this may actually enhance my chances at upgrade as well.

I'd love that in late October. :-)
I've found this for CAD 554 (~ USD 422):
YYJ-SFO-SIN / PEK-IAD-YUL (or YYZ).

But the cost for relocating from SIN to PEK of about USD 195 kills it for me.

I was unable to replicate something like YYJ-SFO-HKG connecting to CAN or HGH, then PEK-IAD-YUL below CAD ~770.

Do we know about other destinations that may work?

Have you tried XIY? Not valid for TWOV but still you can take the train from XIY to PEK or a cheap flight on Ctrip. +150$ for HGH (about the price of the visa so no real savings there).

Some ideas to start your search. Of course you can finish in YUL, YYZ, etc. and you probably can connect in NYC instead of ORD. You can also play with the dates/days to include the island hopper if you like.

Starting in Seattle

Starting in LAX

Way ahead (called this this week and I'm flying in March next year) and yes, it will improve your chances. You will have to HUACA for quite some time before you find somebody willing to help you though. Best of luck!

So, the HKG-HGH-PVG routing is no longer feasible?

The price for USA city-HKG-HGH/PVG-Canada city open jaw is much higher than last year. If one adds the positioning flight (Canada-USA city or Canada-USA city), the price will be similar to the typical round trip price. For example, I can do IAD-SFO-PVG-SFO-IAD for approximately $600. If you are lucky, you can do multiple same-day changes on your outbound flights to reduce cpm.
The USA city-HKG-XIY/PEK-Canada city route is not as attractive as the last year's USA city-HKG-HGH/PVG-Canada city deal because of the cost for going from XIY to PEK (~$100). If you have a Chinese visa and you have not visited Xi'an. this trip may make sense. For me, I am not interested in visiting Xi'an again, especially, in November and December. If you live in east coast, you can probably find this deal for about $400 (hint: from one of home airports).
Good luck.

That's what I was afraid of. I did 2 SFO-HKG-HGH/PVG-SFO(YVR) which got me to UA Gold. Looking to see if this would get me the rest of the way for cheap like last year. The TWOV was key, and crashing on friends' couches in HKG and PVG also helped.

Hello, again, Kxmu.
I am looking for travel in 2019. Trying to burn some ecerts which of course only allow for travel on UA metal. I am looking at an itinerary something like: LAX-SFO-HKG with an open jaw from PEK into N. America, YYZ, YUL or YOW routing via IAD and/or EWR. Your post seems to indicate that for about the same fare as originating in LAX, I can find an itinerary originating out of the Easr Coast. Did I misunderstand your post, or am I going to have to reposition into LAX to get the fare I am looking for?
Thanks again for your continuing assistance in this original itinerary from last year.

I booked RIC-HKG-XIY/PEK-IAD-YYZ for $384. This fare is only available between late October and early December. I did not find this fare for next year (RDU does have this fare, not RIC). Just use the google flight links provided above and click through all flights (United and Cathay Dragon flights). If you check on united.com, the low price may appear right away, depending how you do the multiple destination search. https://www.google.com/flights/?f=0#f=0&flt=RIC.HKG.2018-11-14.RICEWR0UA4426~EWRORD0UA426~ORDHKG0UA895*HKG.XIY .2018-11-16.HKGXIY0KA946*PEK.YUL.2018-11-19.PEKORD0UA850~ORDYUL0UA4400;c:USD;e:1;sd:1;t:f;t t:m;sp:.USD.40051*.USD.40051*.USD.40051 Note that it will save you $15 by searching/booking directly on united.com, instead of clicking the link from this google flight.
Regarding e-certificates, you cannot use them on this itinerary because there are partner flights. But USA-HKG/PEK-Canada open OJ may work.

If some forms of this OJ deal continue indefinitely, it may be worthwhile getting a 10-yr Chinese visa for $140, instead of being restricted by TWOV. Further, you save yourself a lot of headaches in both US (checkin agents) and Chinese airports.

kxmu, I found flights for 2019, itinerary: LAX-SFO-HKG with OJ returning from PEK to Canada all on UA metal allowing the use of ecerts. Dates are fine, with fare of $314. I was trying to get a itinerary for similar fare out if east coast, so as to alleviate the repositioning from east coast to LAX. Any ideas?

Well, I am not an expert on fare rule. If you can digest the fare rule for LAX-SFO-HKG, you may get some hints for the possible east coast originating flights. The RIC-HKG-XIY outbound may have a different fare rule from that of LAX-HKG outbound. You can get the fare rule on ITA Matrix search or united.com.
Good luck.
