Transportation options from HGH to Hangzhou city center or PVG. Please add your name and your itinerary if you are interested in meeting other fellow FTers.
1) Taxi to Hangzhou city center, about 100 RMB ($15) for the entire party, not per person, walking from international terminal to domestic terminal (i.e., right turn after you get outside of the international terminal building), you will see taxi queue.
2) Shuttle bus, 20 RMB ($3), to Wulinmen CAAC Ticket Office or East Railway Station Line (two most popular options). The waiting hall for the shuttle bus is at Gate 10 (you can purchase ticket at Gate 14, too) Arrival Hall, on the first floor of the terminal building. Further details, see https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cit...ation.htm#hang
3) Shuttle from Hangzhou city center to PVG, 110 RMB, 3.5 hours: a) Wulinmen Ticket Office Central Hangzhou to PVG: (5:30, 6:10, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00)
b) Hangzhou Dragon Sports Center to PVG, 110 RMB, (7:00, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00
). Further details, see https://traveladept.com/bus-pudong-hangzhou/
4) Train from Hangzhou East station to Shanghai Hongqiao; less than 100 RMB (~1 hr); then you can take Subway Line #2 to PVG, ~10 RMB and 2 hrs; or shuttle bus (Airport Line #1), about 1 hr, 30 RMB ($4.5), every 15 - 25 minutes. The Hangzhou East ticketing windows are located on 1st Floor, EAST Area of the station. Please allow 20-30 minutes for walking to 2nd floor departure, and security check. The frequency of Hangzhou-Hongqiao trains is as good as that of subways in many US cities.
5) Getting cash at HGH The international terminal at HGH (where you arrive) only has an exchange vendor with hefty fees that is open limited hours. However, the adjacent domestic terminal has a bank ATM. To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.
6 Getting TWOV without issues The advice is to print out your itinerary, hotel reservation, etc., to speed up the procedure at the entry point in China. At SFO, the check-in agents were clueless, so be prepared to get there very early and fight for your boarding passes. Please read the last few pages on this thread for first-hand experiences. Good luck. There is a thread on FT for further details. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/china...hread-231.html

ATM To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.

Travel information for Beijing and airport:
Beijing will have 2 hubs starting Sept 30,2019. PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) is original main hub and will continue for Star Alliance flights and Cathay Pacific (including subsidiary Cathay Dragon Air). PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport, will debut Sept 30, 2019)
planned for airlines of the SkyTeam alliance and One World Alliance (AA, BA, etc. except Cathay Pacific) will be relocated to the new airport. Most flyers taking advantage of this China OJ deal will continue fly through PEK. Some people who use positioning flights through Beijing using non-Star Alliance airlines need to make sure you are flying into PEK, or else need 2hr ground transportation from PKX to PEK.
PEK allows TWOV within 24hr to stay inside security zone airside. This is more convenient for immediate turn than Shanghai-PVG, which force all passengers to exit immigration and customs, then re-check in from land side, even if you have immediate turn within 24hr.

I tried the Galileo confirmation number on the NH website, and I can't get it to pull anything up. It says something like "The reservation could not be confirmed". I've tried multiple combinations of first/middle name for the first name, etc. In the past, it's always been "FirstMiddle", but I have also just tried "First", "First Middle", "FirstMiddleInitial", and "First MiddleInitial", and nothing seems to be working. I tried entering the confirmation number over on viewtrip.com, and I see the following: "TUE, JAN 23, 2018 - Osaka (KIX) to Hangzhou (HGH) - Canceled". On that same tripview page, it lists a different NH confirmation number on the results screen, and when I put that confirmation number into the NH website (along with "FirstMiddle" for my first name), I get an error that says "As the selected itinerary has been cancelled, it cannot be confirmed".

So, I'm beginning to worry that it actually has been cancelled! I need to call UA to confirm that, but I'm not sure what my options would be if it actually is cancelled. I'd like to have as much info/knowledge as possible as to what my options/rights are, so that when I call, I can get it all straightened out if there is indeed a problem! Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? ^

The SFO-HKG segment just dropped off my reservation for no reason. Calling to try to fix it.

... and fixed. Weird.

Did they have any explanation as to why? Were you given any other options for that flight (or did you look into any other options)? I'm still thinking/hoping that since my KIX-HGH (on NH) and HGH-HKG (on CX) segments have dropped off that I might be able to change to the nonstop KIX-HKG (on NH), but I'm not sure how to go about asking for that, etc...

Anyone have any hints/suggestions? Or is that not even a possibility? I still don't understand why it looks like those segments have dropped off my reservation, and I don't want to call UA until I have as much info as possible as to what my options may be! Thanks!

Has anyone tried Not taking the flight from HKG-HGH, does it void the remaining flights? Can you still take remaining UA flights back to USA/Canada?

thanks

I won't take this risk. CX and UA systems are more connected than you think. I did take HGH-HKG twice. For the first time, Check-in agent did only check-in the CX segment. I would not be able to check in the rest of UA flights until I got to HKG. For the second time, I checked in on the CX Kiosk and was able to check in UA flights on UA App at HGH afterwards.
So, just do not skip the CX flight.

After you arrive at HKG gate, you will see your name posted on a small standing board with a few CX agents standby. Usually, one of CX agents will escort you to the CX court to get your CX board pass. After you got the boarding pass to HGH. You're free to go wherever you want and show up at PVG when you are ready back in US or Canada. There is NO database syncronization between UA and CX.

Not always true. My wife had a 40 min connection due to a delay in SFO, and there was no one holding a sign or with her boarding pass. If she hadn't hustled and already had a mobile boarding pass, she would have easily missed the flight. UA did in fact protect her on a later flight, and when I called to drop the protection segment, UA knew she had boarded her KA flight as the coupon had been used. Your statement that there is no syncronization is completely false in this particular instance.

With that said, missing the HKG-HGH within reason and calling in is certainly one way to drop that segment without screwing up the rest of the ticket.

AT HKG, there is NO mobile boarding pass for CX flight. You have to get the paper boarding pass. After you got your CX paper boarding pass, CX will not provide any further feedback the UA.

Umm.. That is not true, at all. Have done it myself many times. Completely incorrect.

KA flight boarding pass

You can check in the KA flight on CX website 48 h in advance and get a mobile boarding pass. I checked in and got one for my first run, but changed the flight in Guam (GUM-HKG-HGH to GUM-PVG) due to a tropical storm.

There were earlier reports that some people encountered issues/delays at check in agents (from the US) and customs/immigration taking too long upon arrival (at HGH) with TWOV. I see a number of people have done these trips. Has anyone recently encountered any more issues, or can you share you experiences? I assume that with the number of travellers increasingly doing this trip, the customs/immigration process at HGH is becoming quicker. I'll be doing this trip in Jan with one other person (on US/Canada passports) with the following routing on United/Cathay Dragon if that helps:

LAS-SFO-HNL-GUM-HKG-HGH (4 days - 96 hours) PVG-KIX-GUM-HNL-SFO-YVR

Does not work for me on a French passport. Tried each time for the three trips I took, but always had to go to KA counter (transfer desk or check-in landside) to get a boarding pass. The easiest way to get through this when you have a day or more in HKG is just to do the process at Hong Kong station, using check-in in the city. They are familiar with TWOV rules and the process is a breeze.

Never assume that the chinese immigration ever learns. Did this trip three times as of now, and the process was exactly the same each time, except one (they were understaffed and just gave me a "temporary entry" stamp on my passport to get rid of me as fast as possible - which caused me a lot of problems afterwards and still does to this day).

The "normal" process at HGH is being brought in a separate room, having to fill out a form with informations about you and your hotel (including phone numbers, address, etc.), having to provide hard copies of flight itinerary and hotel booking (that they get to keep), then they take pictures of you and give you the TWOV sticker, usually 30-45 minutes after you came in the room.

They sure love taking their time and your presence does not seem to bother them in any way. They joke around and yell at each other while you are seated in a couch - even if the process is long, it is quite entertaining and gets you a good introduction of "how business is done" in China

Last time I came in at HGH immigration, I had to explain why THEY gave me the wrong stamp the time before, why THEY decided to give me just enough time to get to my flight departing PVG instead of the 144h exemption, why THEY stamped a "flight canceled" when my flight out of PVG was canceled (UA858) and I had to clear PVG immigration to get out of the airport, with no valid visa as the temporary entry permit was expiring on the exact date of the flight, and why THEY allowed me to exit the day after on my rescheduled flight, one day after the temporary entry permit expiry, giving me another "exit" stamp.

All the situation really bugged them and, by luck, I had on my phone a picture of the "cancellation confirmation letter" provided by United at that time, proving all my story (I will have to keep this letter/picture now for each time I want to enter China as I will be questionned every time for the remaining 8 years of validity of my passport).

In short, really do not count on the chinese immigration doing a better job since they are getting "used" to the TWOV people. They still do the same non-productive routine for every TWOV entry at Hangzhou airport, and will still do the same until they get a special lane for 144h TWOV like the ones at PVG.

Also: if you are travelling as two people on the same flight itinerary, and, like me, you like saving paper when printing itineraries for chinese immigration officials, take care that the pages you decide to print include BOTH the names of you and your friend. I had a bad time explaining that I thought the last page of the itinerary was only advertisement and did not print it, but that the first line on that page I did not have was the name of my friend travelling with me. I showed them the email with both names on my phone, and even United app, but they would not believe me and said that my friend did not have proof of onward travel. They said that they would have to call United, but, after fiddling fifteen minutes to try to find a phone number for United, they decided that they were lazy and just told us to get out and stamped our passports.

Sorry about the rant, but it was fun to write and let it out. Even considering everything I just said... well, I always was able to enter/exit the country on TWOV, even in special circumstances (cancelled flight, friend's name not on the flight itinerary), and I enjoyed my time in China. I just don't think that the best parts of China are its bureaucracy and the beautiful smiles and warm welcome they give you when you are visiting

Did you receive any reward miles from HKG to HGH to your UA or AA account ? If not, your Statement is completely false.

I can't tell if you're trolling or honestly just don't understand how airline ticketing works... I'll assume the latter and say that frequent flyer programs have absolutely nothing to do with how e-tickets and flight coupons get used...

But mostly I just want to prevent the spread of misinformation.
