Transportation options from HGH to Hangzhou city center or PVG. Please add your name and your itinerary if you are interested in meeting other fellow FTers.
1) Taxi to Hangzhou city center, about 100 RMB ($15) for the entire party, not per person, walking from international terminal to domestic terminal (i.e., right turn after you get outside of the international terminal building), you will see taxi queue.
2) Shuttle bus, 20 RMB ($3), to Wulinmen CAAC Ticket Office or East Railway Station Line (two most popular options). The waiting hall for the shuttle bus is at Gate 10 (you can purchase ticket at Gate 14, too) Arrival Hall, on the first floor of the terminal building. Further details, see https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cit...ation.htm#hang
3) Shuttle from Hangzhou city center to PVG, 110 RMB, 3.5 hours: a) Wulinmen Ticket Office Central Hangzhou to PVG: (5:30, 6:10, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00)
b) Hangzhou Dragon Sports Center to PVG, 110 RMB, (7:00, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00
). Further details, see https://traveladept.com/bus-pudong-hangzhou/
4) Train from Hangzhou East station to Shanghai Hongqiao; less than 100 RMB (~1 hr); then you can take Subway Line #2 to PVG, ~10 RMB and 2 hrs; or shuttle bus (Airport Line #1), about 1 hr, 30 RMB ($4.5), every 15 - 25 minutes. The Hangzhou East ticketing windows are located on 1st Floor, EAST Area of the station. Please allow 20-30 minutes for walking to 2nd floor departure, and security check. The frequency of Hangzhou-Hongqiao trains is as good as that of subways in many US cities.
5) Getting cash at HGH The international terminal at HGH (where you arrive) only has an exchange vendor with hefty fees that is open limited hours. However, the adjacent domestic terminal has a bank ATM. To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.
6 Getting TWOV without issues The advice is to print out your itinerary, hotel reservation, etc., to speed up the procedure at the entry point in China. At SFO, the check-in agents were clueless, so be prepared to get there very early and fight for your boarding passes. Please read the last few pages on this thread for first-hand experiences. Good luck. There is a thread on FT for further details. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/china...hread-231.html

ATM To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.

Travel information for Beijing and airport:
Beijing will have 2 hubs starting Sept 30,2019. PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) is original main hub and will continue for Star Alliance flights and Cathay Pacific (including subsidiary Cathay Dragon Air). PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport, will debut Sept 30, 2019)
planned for airlines of the SkyTeam alliance and One World Alliance (AA, BA, etc. except Cathay Pacific) will be relocated to the new airport. Most flyers taking advantage of this China OJ deal will continue fly through PEK. Some people who use positioning flights through Beijing using non-Star Alliance airlines need to make sure you are flying into PEK, or else need 2hr ground transportation from PKX to PEK.
PEK allows TWOV within 24hr to stay inside security zone airside. This is more convenient for immediate turn than Shanghai-PVG, which force all passengers to exit immigration and customs, then re-check in from land side, even if you have immediate turn within 24hr.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
I agree that 1) never checking a bag during a mileage run, and 2) limiting your creativity in re-routing during IRROPS (i.e., UA system can make your trip miserable). It took very long time (30-60 min) for an experienced agent at United Club to modify the routing when a non-UA flight was on your ticket. For both of my trips, I changed GUM-HKG-HGH to GUM-PVG in Guam on one trip and changed SFO-HKG-HGH to SFO-HGH at San Francisco on another trip. From your experience, one can deduct what was allowed to do when IRROPS occurred. It is also helpful that you know what you want and negotiate to get the desired flights.
Happy travels.

I just spent 2 nights in Hangzhou on this deal.

I stayed at Courtyard Hangzhou Qianjang for 7.5k Marriott points/night. What a deal! I am Marriott Gold and got Executive Lounge with breakfast in restaurant.

West Lake in Hangzhou is definitely worth a visit. The shopping around West Lake area is surprising good and I bought 10 pieces of clothes.

Mileage runners beware! For those wanting to credit UA flights to Singapore KrisFlyer, discount economy will no longer earn 100%. This comes really with no notice and applies to flights departing on or after Oct. 1.

100% - B, E, H, M, U, Y
75% - Q, V, W
50% - L,S,T
25% - G, K

This is crazy. My next scheduled trip, end of october, was supposed to get me S* Gold... This is seriously happening with less than a week of notice?

EDIT: Is this only for redeemable miles or also for Elite Miles?

I guess, it is for both. It really sucks, I have 2 trips scheduled, end of Oct and mid Nov...

So is it now better to add the miles to SQ or UA?

For me, with 11k miles to go for S* Gold on SQ, I think I'll stick with crediting to SQ and do a MR later this year. I'm thinking on trying Asiana out of JFK, it seems that there are a lot of economy booking classes on OZ worth 100% when crediting to SQ. Could be a solution, and OZ fares are quite cheap (if doing JFK-ICN-MNL, you can even try their A380/A350 or B747).

This is bad for United, as I don't have any incentive to fly them now, even if I have to say they improved a lot in the recent years, and they did provide a good product for my two MRs earlier this month.

Sorry to dig out the thread, I know it's been inactive, but I found some interesting new way to make this deal work :

I reversed it, starting in east Canada then finishing in north-east USA, going through GUM-HNL on the return flights. This is interesting as it gives the opportunity for one day in Honolulu instead of one hour, and some time in Hong Kong for quick sight-seeing.

I think it also is the flights set with the most miles that I could find.

Added to wiki; have a good trip.

By the way, once you arrive at PVG, it will be better to take airport shuttle bus #1 to Hongqiao train station. The bus shuttle is much faster than the subway line #2 . The last train leaves Hongqiao at 21:30 (arriving at Hangzhou station, instead of Hangzhou East station). The last train to Hangzhou East leaves at 20:52. Alternatively, you can take the long-distance bus to Hangzhou Wulin ticketing office, leaving at 20:00 or 21:00. Or you can take one of the early-morning train to Hangzhou East next day. There is a possibility that tickets are sold out if you do not budget extra time. I waited at Hongqiao for an extra hour to get to Hangzhou on Friday noon.
Good luck.

Thank you very much for the tip! I was thinking of taking the subway line #2 but I know it is really a long ride. I'm going to try the shuttle + train, and if I have any luck, the train won't be sold out. One time I had to wait seven hours in Hangzhou because there were no trains available, either from Hangzhou East or Hangzhou station (!).

I'll also look for the long-distance bus. If it's affordable, it could save me a lot of hassle, and traffic shouldn't be a problem in the evening, I've got a lot of time to spare but I need to be sleeping in Hangzhou, as I cannot see myself running from Shanghai in the morning to get in time in Hangzhou airport at 11am.

The fare for the long distance bus to Hangzhou is slightly over 100 RMB. I took it once and should be comfortable although it took 3.5 h. The long distance bus station at PVG is very close to Maglev and subway stations.

Although the frequency of Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed trains beats that of subway in many cities, I had been unable to purchase desired train tickets (e.g., within one hour) due to the lack of advance reservations recently. I had to ask my friend or family member to book train tickets for me many times before. I solved this problem by installing Alipay App on my phone (you need a bank account in China, unfortunately) and I can book a train ticket myself (without booking fees). You can reserve a ticket on Ctrip App, too, but Ctrip charges you 20 RMB booking fees plus insurance (if you are not careful about it) on a ticket that costs only 60 RMB.
