UA: SFO-(PVG)-GUM-(HNL)-SFO - 14k EQM / $565 (<4cpm) - Nov dates

As the year-end approaches it always seems hard to find good EQM-runs ex-SFO, so this one seems like a pretty good deal:

SFO-PVG-GUM-HNL-SFO : 14268 miles, $565 = 3.96cpm
- available 11/9 & 11/16 (dep Wed, arr back early Fri am)

Other dates in Nov/Dec available for ~$585 (4.11cpm)

Note that this itinerary requires a China visa.

Does it though? You're only transiting through Shanghai...

Actually no Chinese visa is required with an ongoing flight, in Shanghai a stay of up to 72 hours is permitted, and yes you can leave the airport.

I checked with the guys at China TWOV forum and it does need a visa. The route needs a third country for the TWOV to work. GUM and SFO are counted as same country so this wouldn't qualify for TWOV.

Actually, I fear that jbeckett may be correct - visa IS required

As per http://lawandborder.com/china-72-hou...-visa-waiver/:

Traveler must have a ticket proving onward travel to a “third country or region” (not the originating country and not in Mainland China)
[snip]
note that New York -> Beijing -> Guam does not qualify, per Timatic

Sorry guys! I had done a similar trip last year, but via HKG which obviously has more lenient transit rules

China TWOV requires transit to a third country. Is GUM, a US territory, considered as a third country?

So, for no visa requirements, can be done via HKG, but racks up the price to $700:

SFO-HKG-GUM-HNL-SFO - 15230 miles for $700 = 4.59cpm

- dates available in Nov (8, 22, 29) and Dec (6)

Still not outrageous if you need 15k miles!

Would there be cabotage concerns with this route since you are routing through PVG to get to GUM?
Answered my own question, it is on a US carrier so there would be no issue

Ok, sorry for the mis-information. Now I have a question. I'm planning a trip to India from the US, a 2.5 hour layover in Shanghai, followed by a 22.5 hour layover in Kunming, putting me over 24 hours. Do I need a Chinese visa?
