Get the visa! For US passports its a TEN year tourist visa. Also I believe there's a 72 hour visa waiver at the airport, at least I know that's the case for Shanghai.

Visa waiver only applies if you are transiting to a third country > USA-China-Not China-back (via China or somewhere else).
USA-CHINA-USA does not qualify for the waiver, even if it's less than 72 hours. |

China has 2 or now 3 main TWOV - 24 hour and 72, which will be extended to 144 (3 days to 6 days)

You have 72 hours to transit to another country. Transiting back to the US, however, is not a third country (as that means China was your destination) |
