It's a $160 U.S. Fee for a tourist visa if you take it in yourself. Otherwise add the fee of a third party visa company if the Brazilian Embassy isn't in your state.
For me in AZ it needs to be submitted in person or via a third party in Los Angeles. So adding another $89 in third party fees will kill it for me. Darn sounded like a decent getaway!
That is untrue. You can get a Brazilian visa by mail. I did it 2 years ago.

Do you need a visa if you're doing a same day turn around / can you do airside transit?

You can do airside transit. How long is the layover though? I think there is a limit technically.

Are you sure about that? I'd think you'd have a hard time getting on the plane at LAX without the visa.

Yup! AA just filed new fares. It went from $650 on Sunday to $570 yesterday to $450 today. At this rate, it'll be in the $300s tomorrow

If just transiting GRU, Visa is NOT required per Brazilian Consulate.

http://cgbeirute.itamaraty.gov.br/en...ansit_visa.xml

The transit visa (VITRA) shall be granted to an alien that needs to transit through the Brazilian territory in order to reach the country of destination. The transit visa is not required by foreign citizens that only have to make stops or connections in Brazil, provided they remain in the international transit area of the port or airport in Brazil.

Which consulate did you use? For the LA consulate they did not take applications via mail when I got my visa 3 years ago. I still had a TX license back then and the Houston consulate does accept mail applications so I was able to do it but for an AZ resident who has no option but LA (you don't get to choose which consulate to use unless things have changed, it's based on your residency) mail is not an option.

Guys,

FARE IS GONE! I tried from LAX, BWI, PHX, PHL, JFK, ORD, ATL, IAH (the last two to see if AA is attacking UA & DL) and nothing. Most fares now showing $1,000+

LAX-GRU still available sub $450 for various dates in June.

Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to get the visa!
