The FT'er needed a significant number of miles quickly, so he flew to IST to knock it all out in one swoop for an acceptable price.
Again, the destination isn't the goal. Buying status is the goal. Which runway you land on to attain that goal is entirely immaterial. Hossy will be enjoying the benefits of Delta Diamond status all next year due to an IST run booked literally at the last minute.
