Can someone point me to what I might be doing wrong?
Choose the multi-destination button and plug in the different segments.

Found an interesting routing through Mammoth Lakes:

SAN-SFO-IAD-MCO, but it makes one stop in MMH
SAN-MMH-SFO-IAD-MCO $120.

Getting back the next day:
MCO-IAD-SFO-SAN $125.

Found the rate in Jan for 1 night stay. I didn't include MMH in my request but the website added it for me as a stop. From the website, it looks like the segment is from SAN to SFO with a stop in MMH, so does that mean you don't get an extra segment? Maybe you don't get off the plane in MMH.

Anyway, it looks to be about 3.3-3.4cpm

If it has the same flight number, you only get the miles from SAN-SFO and only 1 segment. If you can find the same fare searching multi-city with MMH as one of your stops and book that way, you might be able to get more miles/segments, but I'm not positive.

I got on this one via SFO.
MCO-SFO-SNA-SFO-MCO gives you 5890 miles (with 500 minimum).

Any advice on SNA turnaround? Is this one of the airports where they dump you outside of secure area and have to clear TSA again?

At SNA airport, no matter which gate you arrive, you can walk to any other gate without leaving the secure area.
