My flight for the 17th Dec is depart IST at 1.55 pm and arrive EWR at 6.26 pm. Flight time 11 hours 31 mins.

It was just my reservation that was faulty. I rebooked to come back a day later (also takes the price down to $601) and the reservation now shows the correct time of 11 hours 7 minutes. Typical UA tech glitch.

Booked this ex LAX at $ 747.00 r/t. It is still correct, that a U.S. citizen can buy a visa after arrival at IST airport for $ 20.00?

That is correct. US Citizen, visa upon arrival for $20 USD. Purchase the visa and then go through immigration.

When crediting to UA? If so:

L class on UA metal earns full RDM/EQM

L class on LX metal earns zilch

OK good. I was confused about the LX comments. Not that I'm trying to reach premier level this year (totally useless) but it would be a bummer to not earn miles on a dirt cheap fare like this one.

Obviously this wasn't a trip on UA? Makes me feel a bit better.

Everybody, before this thread closes, and for all the flyers who took this trip already, best way to change money? IST, downtown, bank or else?

It's similar. Airport exchange booth charges 4% commission. The downtown ones (David something) do not have commission, and the exchange rates are a little lower. Also, you can withdraw both Lira and Euro from the same ATM (you will have options).

Most tourist fees appear in EURO.

Kayak

Hello,

My first post! Really good to be here!

I was searching Kayak for this flight and the "previous search calendar" on the right shows someone found a flight for $476 in the past 48 hours. Tried a few combinations to hit that but to no avail. I have never done a mileage run but I would definitely do this one for that price:

No fares seem to be under $638 now.

Again, good to be part of this community.
