Please come to HOUSTON. I will be more than happy to personally welcome to you to our great lone star state. Also, the galleria will be a great stop for your shopping!
(FYI - we came to the bay area 3 times this year and will return 2x next year with DL fare sales and we love it!)

But a question: are the DFW-IAH legs just credited for the actual miles flown, or as 500 miles per leg?

If I understand you correctly, I think you're wrong about the DFW-IAH legs needing to be a separate ticket. If you fly SFO-DFW-IAH-SFW-SFO. you'll get the bonus miles on the SFO-DFW-SFO legs.

Edit: SFO-DFW is 1464 x 2 = 2928 + 500 (elite minimum) for DFW-IAH. This is 3428 one way and 6856 EQM/RDM R/T. 2.5 cpm.
Tons of dates avail in Jan too.

If a different flight number from DFW-IAH and vs the SFO-DFW portion, you will get the Elite 500 mi minimum, as it will be a separate segment. So you will get SFO-DFW x2 + 500 for the DFW-IAH and 2 segments as well. I'm tempted to do a positioning run to SFO out of DFW and do this a few times, cuz as a MR this can't be beat lately.

Of course, SFO-ORD offers more miles on a simple RT, but I'm risk averse when it comes to ORD in winter.
