So what's going on here? Legacy carriers don't issue press releases touting extremely cheap fares from their hubs these days.

Didn't Virgin begin flying these routes about a year ago? This seems targeted to drive a competitor out of business. Why now?

I put a flight on hold but didn't see the '55H1BG' code till now. When I went to try it again, my return flight went up in price. Is there still a way to apply this promo code to my current held itin?? Thanks.

Just got the email and not complaining but trying to figure out the logic here for AA.
http://www.aa.com/i18n/utility/dfw-l...c=&pp=USSFO-IM
I presume these book into deep discount fare so SFO-DFW @ 1464 miles per segment one would need 7 segments in order to complete a Gold challenge and 14 for Plat. That's still not cheap
Gold for 18 months for $140 (fee) + $420 = $560
Plat for 18 months for $240 + $820 = $1060
Alas I don't fly AA much anymore and my Alaska and Qantas flights don't count towards the challenge. But maybe tempting as a mileage run for others particularly those who can use the status

(Actually, for the puny discount, you might be better off booking at one of the third-party sites and getting their points, perhaps with a airfare/hotel package.)
You can also try 73H1BX; 10% but it is embargoed 13-19 October.
