I went by this morning. The place is just about as ready as it can get before cooking the Chili Cheese Tots. Uniformed crew members (one on roller skates!) were windexing the drive-in menu boards, which have their menu graphics installed. All the lights are on, there is activity inside and if there weren't cars blocking the parking lot, I'd think it were open now. More uniformed crew members were sitting at hte tables in front doing something and I asked one of the car-hops (the one on roller skates) when they were opeing and she said on the 19th.
So there you have it! Now, who wanted to schedule the stuff your face with Sonic 'do?? --PP Let's get a date/time chosen |
Sonic opens tomorrow!
The heart wants what it wants, and sometimes it wants Chili Cheese Tots and Cherry Limeade, and sometimes the heart is dashed on the concrete dividers of a strip mall parking lot. The other day, three very large men in a very small car rolled up behind the Sonic Drive-In in Aurora. The smell of tar was pungent. In nearby fields little yellow flags from new developments flapped in the wind. The largest of the men, in the passenger seat, with a stomach so vast and gelatinous it rested on the dashboard as if taking a lunch break, rolled down his window. His right arm hung over the window lip like a dead goose. "You people open yet?" he asked. Sonic general manager Ray Mejia shook his head. "Tuesday," he said. The man slapped his palm hard against the metal of the car door. "The 19th," Mejia said. It has been like this for weeks, since Sonic, the first in the Chicago area, Sonic No. 3,456 in the 55-year-old Oklahoma-based carhop chain, began showing signs of life—since its teenage trainees began learning how to roller-skate in the parking lot while balancing trays of milkshakes and the pavement was power washed and the new employees began eating lunch on the patio overlooking Kirk Road and strolling out back for smoke breaks or sneaking over to Starbucks. It opens tomorrow. For weeks, however, the line of cars has not stopped, the potential customers not ceased; they slow, beg for food, ask when, what day, what time—now? "This is craziness," Mejia said, and turned to meet the SUV that replaced the car of large men. "The 19th," he said. Next car. "The 19th," he said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entert...,5715865.story |
The buzz around Sonic seems to be similar to the buzz generated when Krispy Kreme rolled into town. Several years later, Krispy Kreme seems to have overshot market interest -- plus changing tastes / diet fads. Gotta wonder if Sonic will meet the same fate.
Have to say that a true drive in with carhops makes me pine for the days of Dog n Suds and A&W.... Yeah, some of them are still around, but not the same... I do know people who are nuts about Sonic, so I suspect that a controlled bit of growth will be a good thing. Culvers seems to have succeeded in this market. I could have sworn that Sonic made a run into Chicago a number of years ago. Maybe I'm thinking of Checkers as well, but there were two places on Mannheim (one in Bellwood at Washington -- that was definitely Checkers -- and one just past North Ave.) that opened and shut within the past ten years. Maybe one of those was a Rally's. |

The limeades are fantastic, nice that one can get diet. Tried a few things. Fritos chili cheese wrap with onions, let's just say I'm still blaming the dogs, I could imagine loving these back after a binge night of drinking. The burger was quite enjoyable, I don't think I'd go out of my way for it, but will certainly look forward to having another if in the area. Onion rings seemed made there but were VERY greasy, much more than they should have been. I'm guessing with the surge of customers being one of the first opening weekends the fryer was in heavy duty use and not getting up to proper frying temp. I actually got "in line" for a car stall at 10:50am, there were 7 cars ahead of me, at 11:10am I was in a stall. When I left at 12:30 there were at least 16 cars in line. -- |
Went to Sonic Aurora yesterday en route to the Chelsea Outlet mall. There was a 30 minute wait for a stall. We ROTFLOAO and left. Went to the Papa Bear down Farnworth across from Chase branch. Fabulous hot fudge shake with real ice cream for 3 bucks. ^

Another favorite of mine there is the tater tots. Nice and crispy. If you find yourself going there regularly, search eBay for "sonic cards" and limit it to the Gift Certificate category. I find that most Sonics seldom collect the coupons (especially if you pay for the rest of your order with a gift card), so you can often use them over and over again. Also, get a Sonic gift card (just ask for a $5 one when you place your next order). When you register it online, you get a coupon for a free item. Then with each $15 or $25 reload, you get a coupon for another free item. Oh, and don't forget MakeTJDrink.com for a half price appetizer. Enjoy those half price drinks from 2-4pm! |
I rolled up Sunday at 5:30 PM and there was a 45 minute wait for a stall. As disappointing as this was, I wasn't going to wait THAT long for fast food. Given this long a wait for a friggin' drive in burger, I'd say that Sonic waited far too long to open up a location in Chicagoland. I called several years ago asking about franchising and was told that "Chicago is too cold and snowy too much of the year to support a drive in". I asked "And DENVER isn't cold and snowy enough for you in the winter?" Typical southern state native who thinks that everything north of I-70 is the acrtic circle. Not as bad, though, as the SoCal natives who think that everything east of Pasadena is the Atlantic Ocean.
Off again this morning, back Friday, will try it again. Anyone know the hours of operation? --PP |

We're driving to Marion, Il this weekend. Looking forward to Sonic cuisine. We're sure there won't be a wait for a stall any time we choose to stop.

Called the restaurat, they report there is "about an hour" wait. I wonder how long it wil be before there's an acceptable wait for a stall (I would tolerate 10 minutes)? None of the Sonic locations that I hae ever been to EVER had a wait of ANY kind for a stall, and the most I've ever seen at the drive thru is 3 cars. ATTENTION SONIC: Just think of how much money you could have made over the years if you had opened up a Chicagoland location years ago if almost a month after this location opened there are people waiing an hour to eat there? --PP |

We need to open our own Sonic! I'm in for $10, anyone else? I think we need about a Million.
|
Do remember that they have been advertising Sonic in the Chicagoland area for three or four years. Considering that there is nothing similar in the area, huge crowds are to be expected.
OTOH, the ones we have visited in Nashville this weekend have been quite busy in the morning and at weird times like 2 pm. |
Most Sonics are pretty busy from 2pm - 4pm with Happy Hour (half price drinks and slushes). I've seen some around us (and in our travels) that were near capacity during that time, but have never seen a wait for stalls like they're seeing in Chicago. I don't think I would ever wait more than 5 minutes. It's not that good.

I'd pretty much agree with that. As much as I like Sonic, there's no way I'll be going near that location for at least a couple more weeks; I can't even imagine trying to get in there this past weekend. (Thankfully my upcoming travels will allow me the opportunity for Sonic elsewhere. :) )
We decided that 20 minutes was still a long time to wait and want to BD's Mongolian BBQ in Bolingbrook instead... --PP |

Regarding Sonic... work has been taking me to Nashville and Phoenix a lot lately, so I'm actually a little (gasp) sick of Sonic right now. The 30-60 minute waits in Aurora are insane, even for a Sonic-sized chili cheese tots and diet cherry limeade. What I am waiting for in Chicagoland is a Waffle House (I had breakfast at the I-17/Bell location in Phoenix this morning). Put one of those say at 53/55 down on the south edge of Bolingbrook, and it would be a zoo. |

Stopped at Sonic (Aurora) on Friday morning. The breakfast burrito was acceptable. I had fresh sumatra brewed at home. There was no wait for a stall.
Q: Why can't I reach the car hop call button without exiting my high clearance vehicle's driver seat?? |

It sucks!
Took my family to sonic. They screwed up every order and everyone agreed the food sucked. We'll never be back. You only get one chance to make a good impression. It's now a running joke in our household. Expect it to close soon.

Yeah. I can't wait for the Waffle House to finally make it to ORDland. I like their breakfasts--very filling for those days when stopping for lunch isn't possible.
I take mine scattered and smothered btw. |
