Shopping question [CDs]

Hey guys!
My guide book tells me that the Virgin Megastore and Tower Records are open but apparently they've been closed. Can anyone suggest where people are buying CDs in Chicago these days? Thanks for any input.

You are right, they have both closed. Not sure where you are staying but you could try Borders (two downtown locations - 830 N Michigan and 150 N State. At 3333 N Broadway (in the Lakeview neighborhood), there is a store that carries a lot of unique music - Borderline. http://www.borderlinemusic.com/

I go to Reckless Records: Wicker Park, Lakeview, and now in the Loop as well. Online catalog:

Then again, it kind of exemplifies why "High Fidelity" was filmed in Wicker Park.

For more targeted selections, try the genre emporia, like Jazz Record Mart and Dusty Groove America -- and quite a few more indies that specialize in stuff I've hardly heard of. Sadly, I can't say that I'm doing my share to support their continued existence.

Thanks

Thank you guys for the info. I am staying at The Drake - hopefully either of your suggestions is nearby.

The Borders on Michigan Avenue is just down the street from the Drake.

One other choice with more selection is the FYE on Wabash and Randolph. They are very nice in there and have a good selection. Prices are high. Reckless Records are usually aloof.

It's been years, but I used to go to Dr. Wax, especially the one in Hyde Park. Hyde Park Records is near there.

You could combine those with a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry via the Metra Electric Line, then close out the evening with some blues at the Checkerboard Lounge. That would be a fine day.
