Yes, because even when planes are listed as B, people oftimes emerge from A, and vice versa.

lol, that's happened to my mother a lot. kinda frustrating when I picked her up once since for some reason our phones (t-mobile) got no reception in that waiting area.

There is NO mobile phone reception downstairs. Go over to the windows and you have a better chance of getting a signal. I have never paid more than $10 parking in the T5 lot, while waiting for someone to arrive.

Same here, which sort of makes all the plans to park in "Kiss n Fly" etc. sort of not worth the effort. As long as you keep track of what time the flight is scheduled to arrive - and since INTL flights are long you can usually get a pretty good estimated TOA hours before the plane is due in - it really is just much more convenient to pay the 5 bucks and go ahead and park and forget it.

Another caution is that arriving pax aren't supposed to use cell phones until they're through immigration/customs. There are warning signs that they'll take away your phone, but I do see people using them all the time. So, at ORD arriving INTL pax have a window of opportunity to call from the time the plane hits the ground until you deplane, and then not again until they're through immigration.

This week we actually got minimal cell phone service with T-mobile and ATT in the waiting area; maybe one or two bars worth. Usually there is none till you get outdoors; I think they block it.

I've never paid more than $4 in the T5 lot.

Just a quick update for anyone who needs this info later...

We arrived early and they arrived late, so we were parked over 2 hours which cost $8 and change. Not bad at all considering how convenient T5 parking is to the terminal. So convenient in fact that when I dropped them off yesterday we parked in T5, went in for a drink at the bar, and then got them off to T3 for their flight via the rail. But I digress.

They did come out the doors shown on the board, so it was extremely easy to see them. If in doubt there is a McDonalds on the arrivals level where you could arrange to meet someone as well, or the bar upstairs as others have suggested.

I had no problem with my mobile in the terminal...I have Alltel and was making and receiving calls/texts with no problem, so I guess it depends on the network.

Thanks to the posts in this thread it was a totally stress free situation and went smooth as butter. Thanks everyone!

I realize that this is considerably after the fact, but these questions get asked from time to time...

One of things to consider is staying on top of the arrival time, but not parking in the International lot any longer than necessary. If you have someone with you, drop them in the Kiss n Fly lot (at the end of the people mover). Have them get off at T5 and check the arrival board. When the flight arrives, park in the T5 lot and go in and meet your party -- alternately, have your friend call you and you can provide curb service when they come out.

You can also wait in the cell phone lot... I've never had an issue waiting in either lot for extended periods of time.

If you have Internet access on your cell phone, you can also watch the arrival times that way and head in to park when the plane lands.

And with both the A and B sides to watch, having your party meet you at the bar (or even by McDonald's) is always a good idea.

I will be arriving at ORD in two weeks' time. I just followed what you guys talked about this topic and I appreciate it if you all say what I understand is correct or incorrect.

first, I arrive at terminal 5, gather my luggage and get through the customs
second, I either exit A or B door according to the displaying board
third, my friends shall be waiting for me in a McDonald. but....please...where is it? is it nearer to the A or B door?

Thanks to all

I think it's closer to A. Either way, all you'll need to do is walk out and turn right, you can't miss it.

missvietnam Mar 9, 2008 12:45 am

Thank you Irish Red! I will remember to turn right!

The A or B door will be determined by where baggage claim is for your flight (United flights tend to be near A; American flights by B; the other airlines seem sort of random). You really don't get a choice there, mainly because the crowd of arriving passengers will funnel you to the closest door. But either door will take you into the same lobby area. As with most international airports, when you walk through that door, there will be the usual crowd of people waiting for their friends and relatives. It isn't quite as chaotic as some places, but it can be crowded and confusing.

The McDonald's is a good landmark to meet by simply because the logo is pretty universal. It is not a sit down restaurant area, but a simple counter serving area. Nonetheless, your friends can wait nearby and should see you.

Thank you very very much! P1cunnin! you guys' posts help me know more about what it will be like as I will be there in 11 days. thanks!

missvietnam Mar 15, 2008 5:26 pm

er sorry just one more question, Some say that I can meet other ticketed passengers at the baggage claim area in Terminal 5, but I can't meet people without ticket in the baggage claim because this is still beyond the customs. is it true or just a 'rumor'? but in any case, I can meet those without a ticket in a Mc Donald's or what ever food session available in terminal 5 after the customs done, right? if so I won't bother thinking about the baggage claim and email my friends to pick me up at....Mc Donald's or something.

p1cunnin Mar 17, 2008 9:38 pm

Baggage claim is inside the secured area. Arriving passengers first go through Immigration, then pick up their luggage. On the way out, they hand over their Customs declarations to a Customs agent. Once past that point, they can recheck luggage for connecting flights on American or United, then they pass through the A and B doors to the public area.

thank you very very much :) P1
