Post Office facilities in ORD
I will be arriving from Tokyo on UA at 2:50PM in a couple of weeks time. From the airport I will be making my way downtown to the Travelodge hotel for a couple of nights stay and was planning to get the train in.
My question is I will be arriving with quite a lot of luggage and some of which is for onward sending within the US via either the regular postal service or Fedex etc.. Rather than lugging it all the way downtown I was hoping to send it off from the airport immediately on arrival. I have been browsing the airport website and it seems there is a Post Office but only in the departures area. As i will be arriving internationally and need to clear customs and immigration before collecting my checked baggage am I correct in assuming I wont then be able to access this Post Office.? thanks for your help from anybody in the know..! |
This is what I found:
"U.S. Post Office:The U.S. Post Office has a facility on the upper level of Terminal Two, through security -must be a ticketed passenger. A stamp machine and mail slots are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The post office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; closed Saturday and Sunday." You will be arriving at the international terminal, which is Terminal 5. Therefore, no dice, as you'd have to go through security again. Take a cab will all the luggage, and mail it from town. JP |
From the Blue Line:
- exit at Clark/Lake. Go up to street level, turn left into the atrium, turn right, and you'll find a small post office (open to 5:30 PM). To get to the hotel from there, either take a cab (right outside on LaSalle), or take a bus: go back to the station, exit, turn right and walk along Lake (under the tracks) two blocks to State, cross Lake, and take a #146 south. You'll want off at Harrison, across from the Travelodge. - if you're running late, exit at Jackson. Take the elevator up, cross the street and the plaza to the Loop post office, open until 6 PM. (I usually think this one has longer lines.) From here, you'd get the #146 at State and Jackson, half a block south and one block east. - if you're really late, the Travelodge (65 E. Harrison) is 1/2 mile east of the city's main, 24-hour post office (358 W. Harrison). |
Great Info
thanks to both |
I just used the ORD Post Office today, overheard two postal employees talking about having to move somewhere. When I asked where to at ORD, they said there will be no more USPS facilities at ORD as of December 14th, 2007 these employees were being relocated to another branch.

just checked the ORD website and found this, although i've never used (or noticed, for that matter) it. it may be set up more for smaller items that aren't allowed through security - not sure if you can send luggage from there.
The Mail Safe Express System at O'Hare is an automated mail system now available at security checkpoints. It provides another option for travelers to keep their personal items by choosing to mail them home securely via the United States Postal Service. Every month, nearly 200,000 personal items are surrendered by air travelers going through O’Hare security checkpoints. Despite lists of prohibited items published by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), travelers continue to bring these items to the checkpoints, often creating frustrating and unfortunate situations. Located at Checkpoints 1 and 2 in Terminal 1, Checkpoint 5 in Terminal 2, and Checkpoints 7, 7A, and 9 in Terminal 3, the kiosks are a one-stop packaging, payment and vaulted drop-off station that allow passengers to mail items to domestic or international addresses or hold items at a secure location for pick-up upon return to the airport. All major credits cards are accepted for payment. |
