Meat market/butcher shop recommendations?

I want to find a good butcher shop in the city. I really enjoy Casey's Meats (in Western Springs), but it's too far to away.

I go to Dirk's Fish Market in Lincoln Park for seafood, but I need a good beef/pork/chicken market. :)

Thoughts?

you might want to go ask at lthforum.com - there have been multiple spirited discussons there on the topic.

I know some people recommend Peoria, but I think that is more for bigger items such as ribs, briskets, etc. instead of steaks and chops.

I love Casey's but the price is too high for me for everyday use. I use Costco for stuff for myself, and only go to Casey's when I have people over.

Paulina Market (http://www.paulinameatmarket.com) gets my vote.

I have also found the meat at Whole Foods to be better than average.

lthforum.com has a lot of in depth discussion on this topic, I am sure.

I use a couple different butchers in the west 'burbs - - both probably farther for you than Casey's. However, I notice they all sell Ho-Ka turkeys either year 'round or seasonally. So if you can assume a correlation, you may want to try out some of the butchers on this list near your house.

I second the recommendation for Paulina. In fact, was in there yesterday morning to pick up some lamb for Easter dinner. They had rearranged their cases since the last time I'd been there (January), and seemed to have more room. All hands were on deck, and was amazingly in-and-out in less than 10 minutes. I'd expected (and experienced) a lot longer wait the day before a major holiday.

Paulina Meat Market is the one I know/visit in the city. The best I know in northern Illinois is Eikman's (sp?) in Seward, IL. Out in the general Rockford area.

Thanks for the suggestions about lthforum.com -- never even knew it existed and it's right up my alley!

I'll check out Paulina...Rockford is a touch too far, although UA has a flight there now... :D

I believe that Paulina is either under recent new ownership or a recent cash infusion, I forget which.

Fellow LTH readers: we need a code to identify ourselves over there... :) as well as a group outing at an LTH-favorite such as Katy's Dumplings...

I would recommend Whole Foods for meat in LP. They are up there with the best butchers

Has anyone ever tried Bornhofen Meat Market on Broadway near Granville? I have walked by but never stopped in.

Billy's Market at Madison & Ridgeland in Oak Park. The store might look kind of dumpy but prices are good and the quality of meat is decent. Additionally, there is a Whole Foods at Lake and Harlem in River Forest.

I think the OP wanted butchers in the city. Plenty of Whole Foods in the city. There's one on North Avenue and another one on W Huron

Another spot I know of is Wittingham meats on 127th St. in Alsip.
