I've never understood why my parents love Portillo's so much, like others in the thread I think they're only ok.
I prefer Mr. A's near home to Portillo's, though it's nothing too special. Luke's in Wauconda was a former favorite, until the company moved. Sadly, I've not been to Mr. Beef's. Here's a question though: Who has had that magic Sausage/Beef combo? I get it from time to time when I feel like living on the edge. |
Mr. Beef
glad i stumbled over this thread today.
just got back from Mr. Beef, good stuff^ |
No one can make a better beef than Roma's. There was a Roma's that called itself the original on Milwaukee. That's not the one I'm talking about.
Roma's on Cicero Ave just south of Montrose. They have been there for decades. I got my first taste in the 70's when I worked down the street at Sears and they had already been around for years. People go out of their way for Roma's. No grease, no gristle, deep taste. I prefer mine wet with hot on the side. Portillo's, Buona, Mr. Beef are just pretenders to the throne. There is NO better in Chicago. I will drive miles out of my way back to the old neighborhood for Roma's. Mr. Beef and Al's are minutes from my door, and I won't even consider them. Best yet they stay open until 10 Sunday - Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday. Romas Italian Beef & Sausage (773) 725-5715 4237 N Cicero Ave Chicago, IL 60641 |

I was in the old neighborhood on Saturday and ended up picking up some Beef's to bring home. Yes, they were as good as I think they are. They have shrunk, I guess it's just a sign of the times and the economy. But, I would prefer a smaller Roma's beef over a Mr. Beef or Al's anytime. There is an Al's across the street from where I work and now it has been ruined for me.

new Buona Beef
I just went to the original Buona Beef in Berwyn yesterday and it's all new! They said they shut down for 8 weeks this spring and moved into a brand new building in May. The Beef's are the same though. :)

This was a key consideration for the Labor Day trip I just booked. Problem is that Mr. Beef will be closed by the time I get there on Saturday. Ugh...
