Frozen Custard - Chicago

Wow, just had some incredible frozen custard from a place called Scooter's. Located on the corner of Belmont and Paulina on Chicago's northside.

It had a nice % of butterfat to it. YUM, delicious stuff.

There is a chain that has some locations in the outside burbs of Chicago called Culver's, trust me, Culver's frozen custard does not come close to the richness that Scooter's has.

My wife and have had Scooters about twice a week since it opened.

It is good. Try the Peach Melange, the mere thought of which is making me salivate on my keyboard.

a) Methinks I need to read instead of scan.
b) I know a pretty decent custard shop but it's not in Chicago. There is a place called Jarling's Custard Shoppe on Kirby St. in Champaign. It's not too far from Memorial Stadium.

It was a beautiful day on Friday, so I left work downtown a little early and drove up to Scooter's. I got a dish with 1/3 Vanilla and 2/3 Pumpkin.

I thought the Vanilla was excellent. It was silkier and softer than Culver's (which I prefer in milkshakes) and tasted a little better. I was not as impressed by the Pumpkin flavor. It was good, but no better than Culver's.

At 5pm on a Friday, street parking was an issue. I cheated and parked in the Walgreen's lot, first going in and buying a bottle of water as I felt guilty.

Would I go there again? If I was having dinner in the area, or driving back from Evanston, absolutely. But I would not drive in from south DuPage for it as I would for a Byron's Slotkowski Polish Sausage or a Walker Brothers' apple pancake.

Is this still a good place? Is it the best for frozen custard in Chicago?

Is it open year round?

What is a favorite flavor?

details on Scooters here: http://scootersfrozencustard.com/

They open at 2pm, FYI

I still maintain the richest custard in Chicago. Milwaukee places still use more butterfat but Scooters is certainly delicious. Better than Culver's (more butterfat as well)

You think I'd have learned how to read. I had checked their website, but completely overlooked this:

Store Hours:

Monday Closed Monday's Labor Day to Memorial Day

Tuesday- Saturday: No later than 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Sunday: No later than 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Actually, it is the ONLY place you can get frozen custard in Chicago - other than the few other places that happen to sell Scooters frozen custard (which happens to include Jerry's Sandwiches on Madison). There are no Culver's in the city. AND, at Culver's, you can get a butterburger, which is just as good a reason to go as the custard!

Do call before you go -- they close during the winter. I was last in the area a few weeks ago and thought I saw an "open again!" sign.
