Cheap restaurants in Chicago

Hello
I will be in Chicago for 2 days next week with familly members, and am looking for cheap restaurants which provide honest food, (we are not really into gastronomy during vacations, but are not into fast foods either http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...orum/smile.gif
Sorry I don't have time to review the numerous posts of this thread to check by myself.
Let me tell you that I consider a meal as cheap for an average $10-15 per person (excluding beverages).
Any idea where to go?
Thanks

Two questions:

#1. Where in the Chicago area?

#2. What do you mean by "honest" food?

Assuming you have transportation worked out, and assuming you are French/Francophile, let me make a couple suggestions:

French - two suggestions for cheap, good French:
Le Bouchon, 1958 North Damen, cheap, authentic Provencal French
Rudi's, 2424 North Ashland Ave.
Vietnamese - Pasteur, 5525 North Broadway - one of the BEST cheap restaurants in Chicago
Algerian - The Casbah Cafe, 3151 North Broadway.
Moroccan - L'Olive, 1629 North Halsted, at North Avenue
Pizza - Lou Malnati's (best "Chicago-style" pizza in Chicago)
Mexican - Caminos de Michoacan #2, 3948 North Sheridan - SO good, authentic and dirt cheap!

Un peu plus cher:
American - Jack's, at Belmont/Halsted; great California wines and beef tenderloin. HUGE desserts.

Enjoy your stay there!

Thank you anonplz... Sure I will try one or two of them http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...orum/smile.gif
I'll stay in downtown Chicago but will use CTA a lot. As "honest food" I was thinking of anything but kebabs and hamburgers (though some may be great, but my familly doesn't really like them...)
Thanks to both of you...

Finally, if by "downtown" you mean around Michigan Avenue, good, cheap food can always be found in one of the cute little delicatessens in the shopping malls on Michigan Avenue, like Water Tower Place, 900 N. Michigan, Saks Fifth Avenue, and in the hotels, like the Coq D'Or at the Drake Hotel or at the Marriott.

Grenouille, A few suggestions w/links to previous threads in Flyertalk:

Off the Red Line at the Argyle stop is Chicago’s version of Vietnam Town. Many many restaurants to choose from, here are a few of my faves:

Get some pho soup at Pho 777, there is a Pho 888 and 999 but I like 777 the best to date.
Sun Wah BBQ serves great BBQ duck dishes, delicious.
BALE for Bahn Mi Sandwiches: http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...ML/000019.html

Under the Red Line at the Bryn Mawr stop is Hella’s for Gyros. Many places serve gyros in Chicago, but Hella’s uses high quality gyros meat which sets it apart from the many that do not.
About two blocks from the Bryn Mawr stop is a Mexican Taqueria called Uptown, corner of Bryn Mawr and Broadway. Uptown serves very good tacos, burritos and the like.

If you take the Red Line south to Chinatown, I would go to Phoenix Restaurant for Dim Sum, make sure you put someone who is not timid near the aisles to hail the dim sum carts to your table. It is great fun pointing and gesturing to the various foods.

A corned beef sandwich from Manny’s would be a great idea and is 5 blocks south of the Clinton stop on the Blue Line. Manny’s info: http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...ML/000042.html

All the above are very cheap yet serve very good food.

Please post your results, both good and bad!!!!
