Looking at a night or two in Chicago, and over Ł400/night for a couple of IHG hotels down to maybe Ł95 ($125?) near the airport.

Are any of any airport hotels easy to access from say the train system or is a car required?

A car is not required. Most of the large hotels on River Road in Rosemont are a short walk from the Rosemont Blue Line station.

Look around Rosemont, it's on the blue line which runs to downtown and also out to ORD. Most are walkable that are located on River Road.

The ORD Hilton itself sits above the O'Hare Stop.

And there's a few more around the Cumberland stop, one stop closer to the city. A couple of those are very close to the station as well.

But note that it will be a 40ish minute ride on the Blue Line to downtown from the ORD-area hotels.

It took almost an hour yesterday at approximately 5:30 pm on the Blue Line from Washington to ORD. It was extremely crowded and standing room only until Logan Square.

My primary hotel by ORD is the Hyatt Regency which is a very short walk (3-4 minutes) from the Rosemont blue line station.

I usually stay at Renaissance Suites O'Hare, which has blue line exit next to it so easy into the city (although as others have noted, takes about 40 minutes). Nice hotel. Exec lounge open if you get a club floor. Has restaurant & bar. Usually prices there are less than some of the other hotels.

Cheers.
