Are the fares for CVG really outrageous?

This article seems to say so:

https://washingtonmonthly.com/magazi...inal-sickness/

But if you are in the business of making and trading stuff beyond derivatives and concepts, you probably have to go to places like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Memphis, St. Louis, or Minneapolis, and you know firsthand how hard it has become to do business these days in such major heartland cities, which are increasingly cut off from each other and from the global economy.

Interesting article. I agree with most of the points.

You do realize this article was from 2012?

Fares at CVG have declined substantially since that article was written. There is much more competition in CVG from low cost carriers that have driven down prices.

That being said:

(1) Fares to/from the midwest are still high compared to other parts of the country
(2) The number of non-stop destinations from CVG and other former midwest hubs continues to decline. By the time I drive to CVG to take a connecting flight to STL, PIT, CLE, etc. I might as well just drive.
