Is This a Record?
I don't recall ever seeing a published delay anywhere near this long, where the airport isn't closed.
Chicago O'Hare Intl (KORD) is currently experiencing: arrival delays for airborne aircraft an average of 37 minutes departure delays of 1 hours 46 minutes to 2 hours (and increasing) due to thunderstorms inbound flights delayed at their origin an average of 5 hours 41 minutes due to thunderstorms |
The ORD arrivals board looks like a campfire, full or yellow, orange, and red.
Just the first one I clicked DL 4669 Scheduled - Delayed Delay: 750 minutes Scheduled Arrival Time: 10:15 pm Estimated Arrival Time: 10:46 am EDIT - it's like a game ... AA 3166 Delay: 824 minutes Scheduled Arrival Time: 09:00 pm Estimated Arrival Time: 10:45 am Active Advisory: Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Flood Warning, Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch Active Notice: Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch Expect occasional thunderstorms to continue for the next several hours. |

DL 4462 - say est. arrival 10:49a, so only 736 minutes late. But... it's still "Awaiting Takeoff "
AA3166 - Delayed: In flight Estimated 10:59 AM - 839 minutes (13 hrs, 59 minutes) late. DL 4669 still hasn't flown - estimated departure 9:55a arrival 12:07p - 832 minutes (13 hrs. 52 minutes) late. So it's still neck-and-neck. With the weather at DTW, my money's on Delta coming from in front. Amusingly, Flight 4669 On Time %: 100 |
At the point the airline decides to scrub it for the next morning, it's almost a cancel/run the next day as opposed to a delay. ie, some of that time is just because they probably can't reasonably take off at 2 or 3 AM.
It was quite stormy last night, rained a lot of the night. Upside, it's clear now and looks like it should be reasonable today and tomorrow, so ORD should get caught up. |
I was at LAS that night waiting for an AA redeye LAS-ORD that depended on inbound cabin crew. We were initially cancelled, but reinstated around midnight when our crew's ex-ORD flight miraculously slipped out and got airborne between thunderstorm cells. We left LAS a couple of hours late but luckier than many, and when we landed at O'Hare Saturday morning the gate scene was ultra-chaotic with flights that had been delayed all night finally loading up and getting out. Took us quite awhile to find an H/ K gate.
