Thanks to all the suggestions. We started out at the Map Room. Then went to 6 senses or something like that. Then over to Jack and Gingers for some food. Everyone we met said we should go to Division Street. So we headed over there...ugh not my scene. Felt like a bad bourbon street. Watching two girls get arrested that were absolutely freaking out. Hit a couple of the bars there, but didn't really care for it.
Thanks again though the map room was a cool spot I would have overlooked. Also made me realize how much bigger the Chicago metro area is. Who are these people in Bucktown recommending Division? As you saw, very different scenes. Were they also recommending Wrigleyville? You didn't seem to want bro-central, so none of us would recommend Division or Wrigley. |

6 Degrees? If so, you should have eaten there, they feature a Springfield, IL sandwich called a horseshoe. Take Texas toast, cover with meat, fries and an incredible cheese sauce for a wonderfully delicious mess.

Our first Uber driver was all about Wrigleyville, I can't imagine Wrigleyville being even more bro centric. Although thanks to the Blues Brothers I'll never forget the address to Wrigley Field. :D |

1) Really from Schaumberg, Naperville or some equally far-out destination, or 2) 75 years old and heard that Division is "where all the kids go these days." I've lived in the city proper since 1992 and have had two occasions when someone has suggested going to Division: 1) An out-of-towner who liked Jilly's. Strike that...Jilly's wasn't even on Division, but rather on Rush, which is almost the same thing. 2) After a bachelorette party at Tavern on Rush, and after many cocktails at Jilly's, I met a boy who'd just moved into town and suggested we go to the Hange Uppe on Division. We dated for three years. We never we went back to Division. |
Like I said Flyertalk was once again the right place to go. Not the guy sitting next to me at a bar. Who knew? I wasn't even aware of Division street until we were in a car on the way from the airport. Uber driver number one raved about Wrigleyville a place called mothers and a strip club called heavenly bodies. Although he said he got married 10 years ago and hasn't really been going out. His advice was quickly disregarded. Then we hit the map room. We both agreed we liked the beer list and the fact that it wasn't terribly crowded. Only the desire to get food drove us out of the Map Room and over to 6 Senses/Degress I can't remember. After a couple more beers there the bartender steered us over to Jack and Gingers where the people sitting next to us who were late 20s and Latino said oh man if he's never been to Chicago you have to go to Division Street. After we finished eating we decided whatever lets go check out this Division Street thing. Definitely not the right choice... Although I realized that Mothers was on Division, but we didn't see any reason to pay the cover to check it out. I can't even tell you the name of the bar we went to on Division it was some kind of smaller pub really narrow. We didn't even finish our beers there we looked around and realized it was 95% guys. Then the scene on the street was ridiculous with the police, so we knew it was time to get out of there.

By the way, although I (honestly!) have never been there, I believe Heavenly Bodies is out by O'Hare somewhere, and would have been about the worst advice you could have been given since you were looking for a night out in the city. He probably gets a kick-back there. |
Well to be fair he said that's where we should end the night since we were staying by the airport.

Good lesson for anyone who reads this thread. I'm not a heavy Uber user, but it applies to cab drivers so I'm sure Uber too. These are the worst people to get advice from in the city, never ask a driver here in Chicago, they are clueless.

I'd edit that to say it's OK to ask non-native cab drivers what restaurant in the city does the best job of replicating their country's cuisine.

You know, I've been thinking...I wonder if the people who suggested you go to Division were actually referring to the Bucktown part (centered around Division & Damen) and not the cheesy tourist trap area near Rush & Division. Given that he was at a Bucktown bar when the suggestion was made, they might have been simply pointing him due south to Damen & Division.

But I suspect you're right. Hard to believe someone sitting in a Bucktown bar would tell anyone to go to Rush. In fact, when I first moved to Chicago (MANY years ago), that suggestion might have gotten you stabbed in certain Bucktown bars! :D |

But the "if you've never been to Chicago, you *have* to go to Division" probably means Division/Rush.

LOL...#2 is more like that's where those 75 years olds went when they were young bar-hoppers!

I mentioned that earlier as well in one of my posts. Although 100 times better than Rush, still probably not where I'd send an out of towner on a Friday night who was looking for what the OP was. Even in the area, I send them north on Milwaukee to Logan Square I think.
