This place is carry-out only: we would have to think of a place to eat. One possibility might be 'halfacre'. They do not serve food and encourage you to bring yours in. Halfacre is in Lincoln Square - about a 5 minute drive.

good suggestion, now a reality: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...pril-16-a.html

All are invited!

curious, are you burbs so geographically tough or you travel during week?

Two reasons why weekday nights are far preferable (having done a lot of these)
1) Group is never static, if I have to increase/decrease reservation size is it a pain in the arse if on a weekend. There have been times where I've had to plan last minute audible as restaurants have told me they can't accomodate a change due to it being their super busy times.

2) because weekdays are generally not restaurants busy time, better service, better attention and ZERO issues changing size of reservation.

That said there are some Do's/events that are planned for weekends, (like in CommunityBuzz I'm planning a Russian Dinner on a Friday, prob in June).

I thought my location was updated... just added it.

1) Updated location ;) and, yes I travel during the week. So double whammy!

2) I understand the issue with weekends. If, I can manage would love to be there.

If you are doing the Russian Tea House, the NY one beats Chicago. No contest there.

There are weekend do's here in Chicago, so stay tuned to CommunityBuzz, maybe I'll get together another progressive Argyle Vietnamese dinner do going, the previous one was a lot of fun and if the group doesn't get too big, we can get in/out of various Argyle restaurants on a weekend to sample the best dish(es) each has to offer.

I don't doubt that. The restaurant we have in mind is in Northbrook, got the approval of a Russian FTer.

As far as Russian food goes, I wonder if the really good ones are in Brighton Beach? I make it to NY about once a month, but never seem to leave Manhattan - maybe next time.

Russian Tea Room is on 7th and 57th in Manhattan. Don't know about the food... only been there for tea and pastries.

datapoint to add re: Harold's

Chicken was very good, worth the wait.

BUT, they were out of chicken livers, biscuits, potato salad:td:

creamed corn nuggets were crap, stay clear of those.

I'm a fan of Harold's FC. i got their delivery one time. I waited outside the building and kept waiting expecting to see a car or bike pull up until the delivery guy walked up to the building. it was a looong walk for him.

Yes, 10+ showed up, some live bluegrass music playing, good beers, chicken was great. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...pril-16-a.html

Next current dinner on the books is a Russian Dinner: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...une-7-7pm.html

But I’m looking to get a couple dinners going before that, a middle eastern meal in Bridgeview and an Eritrean (close to Ethiopian) meal around 6600 N Clark.

I say the following in my best TV announcer voice: Stay tuned to the CommunityBuzz forum for these and other Flyertalk events: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/communitybuzz-380/ :D

Harold's Chicken originated on the South Side of Chicago in the 50s. First location I was told was over a tavern where the meals were sent down from 2nd floor. My personal memories are 47th street between Kimbark and Kenwood, across from the Ken Theater around 1959. Harold was in the kitchen and chicken was fantastic. Advertised with white finned Cadillac with Chicken head on roof. It was franchised out to about 60 or 80 locations in Chicago area with varied success. The bags gave list of addresses. They opened downtown, added new items like shrimp but it was not the same. A few franchises made it outside the city. 2 years ago, they tried Las Vegas where I now live, but the magic was gone and it quickly closed as the former Chicagoans who lined the door when it opened, were disappointed. 73rd and Halsted was the last location I visited that held the magic and where I go on trips home.

The story gets uglier. Harolds daughter (who is now running the Company) is taking all the fun out of Harold's. She is trying to upgrade, get licensees to conform and is even considering taking the 'Shack' out of 'Harolds Chicken Shack'. Her plan is to expand into stadiums, airports and colleges campuses. Maybe Navy Pier will be next.
