Doughnuts

Though originally a Chicago native, we have lived elsewhere for the last 20 years.

Staying at the Kimpton- Allegro, next week.
Seeking doughnut recommendations. My research seems to indicate Doughnut Vault or Do-Rite. What is your preference? Are both walking distance from the Allegro?

jerry a. laska Mar 19, 2013 6:14 pm

A couple of suggestions here, including Glazed and Infused:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chica...iny-space.html
Do-Rite is just a couple of blocks down the street. The doughnut vault is 4 or 5 blocks away across the river. G & I in the West Loop is further still but you could take the Green line to within a block or so.

Firecakes (http://www.firecakesdonuts.com/) is also very good and easy walking distance from your hotel.

Yes... and it is excellent! Worth a trip.

I didn't see this in time, but my vote would be for Glazed and Infused on Fulton Market. Love the maple bacon (as good as Voodoo in Portland), creme brulee and glazed. They are very expensive ($2.50 - $3.00), however.

Amicus Mar 26, 2013 10:02 pm

Loved the suggestions, and we are all a wee bit heavier as a result. Thank you for the ideas, we are trying a different place each morning. Do Rite was our first stop, a quick walk from the Allegro . . . Tried the maple bacon, and peanut butter/jelly. Yum.

I tried Firecakes recently....their lemon meringue is really good!

jerry a. laska May 30, 2013 10:46 am

Visited Do-Rite a couple of weeks ago the lemon old fashioned and buttermilk old fashioned were quite good as well as the pistachio-meyer lemon.

Time Out tries out every (almost) doughnut!

Glazed & Infused Donuts

I was able to try some donuts from Glazed & Infused Donuts

The old fashioned (G&I's version of buttermilk), had no buttermilk flavor and the frosting/glaze actually tasted pasty. Their website states that it is a "spiced buttermilk cake", I think not.

Crème brulee was tasty, but the only reason is because the filling is delicious.

Vanilla Bean glazed which was a waste of calorie input, nothing special nor vanilla bean about it.

A sugar coated donut, was the best of the bunch as I could actually taste the donut as it didn't have glaze but that isn't saying much.

Count me as not a fan

I visited G & I a couple of months back and wasn't blown away. The crème brule was the best of what I tried also.

I think generally their filled donuts are much better than the glazed ones. Still, far from the top tier in the city.

I've been twice now and agree with the OP. Once to the West Fulton Market location, and once to the one at six corners. Both times I couldn't eat a whole doughnut, nor did I have any desire to. Too heavy, IMHO.

The only thing they got right was the texture of the bacon on the maple bacon bar. The only other one I've had is at Voodoo in PDX, and it featured a piece of limp and practically uncooked bacon. This was much better.

I'm guessing you had cake, as opposed to raised doughnuts, as I don't think a raised doughnut could be heavy if made properly. I think the issue is that they're huge, not to mention expensive.

They were raised, and they were too heavy (or dense) for my taste. Not as dense as cake, but still too dense. They were also too big, but that was only because they were so dense.

Jerry, you did a bad thing.

One of the participating bakeries (Gurnee Donuts) is about 10 minutes from my office.

I am already in donut withdrawal mode!

1030a in Chicagoland, sounds like there's a donut calling your name.

Longtime LA area donut shop Stan's donuts has opened at corner of Damen, North Ave, Milwaukee.

And it is very, very good. I'm going to get very fat with that in the neighborhood.

A friend brought an assortment to brunch on Sunday and they were delicious. I don't remember all that we had, but I'd definitely go back for some more!

Is a Paczki a doughnut? I've never had one, but Uber is delivering them tomorrow and I may give it a shot.

More like a filled jelly donut.

Visited Do-Rite Do-Nuts and Chicken on Erie recently and had the cinnamon crunch and the buttermilk old-fashioned. Both were warm and excellent.

Also visited the Glazed and Infused storefront on Hubbard St, and had a old-fashioned which was good but, imo, not as good as the Do-Rite version.

Reminds me that I have had a couple of "do-sants," Mariano's version of the cronut (which I have not had). They're pretty sinful. I can only imagine what the real thing tastes like. :)

I have also had these and they are pretty 👍.

In my opinion, the donuts across the street at Glazed and Infused are much better.

Funny, I always ask myself why anyone would go to Glazed and Infused when Stan's is right there. I wasn't a fan of G&I when I tried them a year ago, but I suppose I'm due for another test.

I think Stan's is close to the best in the city. Donut Vault cake donuts are better, but you have to deal with hipster nonsense to get them.
