What is good suburb to live near Topeka, KS?

I will be relocating for a job in Topeka. I do not want to live in Topeka. What are the good suburbs within reasonable driving distance of Topeka (45 mins to an hour) with good schools (elementary/middle/HS).

We plan on keeping our house in Chicago, so we have limited budget for another house. Can we get anything decent for $300k (4 bedroom minimum)?

There are not really suburbs around Topeka - just other small towns. If you don't want a small town, Lawrence is really fantastic and not too far, about 20 miles to the East. They school district has two high schools (yes, lots of students, quite large) but the grade/middle schools are broken out into smaller schools. If you want a small town, Silver Lake has a good reputation. I grew up in a really small town 30 miles to the NE that I won't recommend (or comment negatively on in a public forum :)) Others are good as well, those are the first two that come to mind.

I am not sure what $300K will get you in Lawrence, but I don't see it as a problem to get something nice. Anywhere else, you definitely should find something that makes you happy. Housing in KS is pretty dang cheap still. It still makes me smile remembering my mom complaining about spending $69k for her house in 2003 that she was being ripped off.

I totally agree about Lawrence as a great alternative. It's a very nice university town. That would also mean that you're living closer to KCMO for big city attractions such as shopping, restaurants, health care, airport, and sports. Go Chiefs!

As a K-Stater, I want to say that Lawrence sucks. That entire county doesn't belong in the state of Kansas.:)

But seriously, just find a nice subdivision of Topeka & you will be happy. I think with your budget you will be able to find an area that you will be very happy with.

Wholeheartedly agree as a fellow K-Stater myself...nonetheless, I try to remain objective for those that do not share my extreme dislike of chickens, or birds, or whatever those mythical things are that Cats eat. :)
