How to get to Evansville, IN?
Is there an airport close to Evansville without paying $700 per ticket for? Looking to stay flying on Delta if possible. Is the Louisville to Evansville a decent drive?
|
Where are you flying from? How far are you willing to drive? If you use kayak.com you can check the box that says "include nearby airports" to see if anything else is close by.

I would: Fly to Indy and rent a car. or Amtrak to Effingham and rent a car. |
Evansville is a tough trip. I was there numerous times years ago, and like you I tried to stay on DL. I drove from CVG, SDF, and IND. Once I went through STL on TWA (that tells you how long ago it was). If I were you, I would get a nonstop to the closest big city, and drive. I agree, there's nothing interesting on the trip, but you may get close to Santa Claus IN.

I live in Indy and have a lot of family in Evansville so I make it down there a few times a year. Trust me, the drive to EVV from Louisville and Nashville is much better than the drive from Indy. Even St. Louis is better than the drive from Indy. You can get to Evansville from Louisville in under 2 hours.
If you are wanting to fly Delta and can get a direct flight to CVG then you might want to drive from there. It's probably about a 3 hour drive. |
I agree that the non-stop to CVG and then driving is probably the most efficient. On the other hand, due to the WN effect, it may be cheaper to fly to SDF (e.g.) even if it involves a connection through CVG, and then drive. That has the added advantage of an additional DL segment.

I live in Louisville, have family in the Evansville area and make the trip quite often. It is interstate all the way, so an easy 2 hrs but boring drive. CVG would add another 1 1/2 hours to the drive. St Louis is about 3 hours away.

BNA would also be an option (but probably almost as expensive as flying to EVV). It's about 2 hours away. Plus, you can stop in Bowling Green and visit the Corvette Museum.
Growing up in EVV, we'd start about 75% of our airplane trips driving to STL or SDF or BNA. |

BNA is more like 3 hours away, and the traffic out of there can be a real killer if anywhere near the rush hour. SDF is a much easier and quicker drive to EVV. |
BNA is about 2.5 hours; not the greatest drive but served extensively by WN. The rush-hour reliever from the airport is to take Briley Parkway North (a loop) to I-24 West (avoids the conjunction of I-24, I-40, and I-65 downtown, which can be dreadful).
