Day Prices Drop?

We are looking at booking a flight for December and the later flight is $40 less than the earlier flight (the one we want), even tho the earlier is completely empty. For the last two weeks I have been holding seats in the event it would drop, but am kinda getting tired of that.

Out of three flights the last 6 months we have see this.
YX offering the flight we want for more than the others, even tho the one we want is virtually empty This happened to us for our Holiday travel and after watching it for weeks we finally booked the lower priced fare, which was not our top choice for time. Two days later they dropped the rates of the flight we had wanted.

Does anyone know why this seems to common for them to have the empty flights at higher fare? Also, is a day of the week that prices drop?

its not that the flight is emptier, its that the flight is earlier. I've seen if you want to leave town in the morning or at night your going to pay more. leave mid day to save, but then your day is kind of shot. I love taking the first flight out of the day 5am ish getting to the destination 8ish and just relaxing all day while everyone else arrives in heards

Thanks for the tip! We never book a flight this far in advanced, so I am a little "lost" so to speak. Being that it is over the Holiday, we wanted to book early to make sure we were not going to pay an arm and leg. But like I said, NO one has booked the return flight we want. So it seems weird to me that it is higher than the other flight(s).

Anyway, I appreciate your thought!
