Kish Island

I find myself with a layover of a few days in March in Dubai, which I've already seen. I see that flydubai has regular flights to Kish Island, which doesn't require a visa, even for Americans. Can anyone - especially someone who has visited - advise on procedures and any issues I need to be aware of, lodging or tour recommendations, logistical formalities? Thank you!

You will receive a passport stamp, which can be a problem if you're not a US resident/citizen and come from a visa-waiver country, as you will no longer be eligible for ESTA to travel to the US, having visited Iran.

Snorkeling is one of the biggest draws of the island — it's some of the best in the world. There are many hotels and it's probably easiest to just find something upon arrival, but there are Tehran-based agencies that can take international payment methods if you prefer to pre-book.

The island is dry, as with the rest of Iran. It's a very small island and I'd suggest a pre-organized tour may not be needed — asking around upon arrival should suffice.

If you're female, there are a few additional considerations: you must cover up, but they actually provide clothing at the airport which you can return upon departure. Also, the best snorkeling is from beaches that are off-limits to women.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I still have a little time to decide what makes sense or not.

No problem! I would also highly recommend Oman as a side trip from UAE, if you haven't been. It's easily accessed, and has a very different character from the more ritzy Gulf countries, and a long and fascinating history. With a few days from Dubai, either Muscat (and potentially Jabal al-Akhdar / Nizwa) or the Musandam peninsula could be achievable as side trips.

Hi,

I've been to Muscat and nearby, but not anywhere else in Oman yet. Definitely a consideration.
