Spread Hajj over entire year?

I don't wish to stray into political territory, this is purely a practical idea.

Given the problems caused by the virus situation, and yet many many thousands of people every year being denied the opportunity to make their pilgrimage (more so now), why don't the Saudi authorities work with the religious authorities to propose that Hajj can count as fulfilling one's obligation if done any time of the year?

Or even at least spreading the valid time period for more days over the month in which Hajj normally occurs?

Having everyone crush into 5-6 days seems like it will be unworkable, given... the population of the world...

Haj is indelibly linked to the month of Dhul Hijjah ("month of the pilgrimage"), just as Ramadan is, well, Ramadan. And the first days of that month intensify the value of righteous deeds, rounding up with Eid. It's part of a faith system you're stuck with.

Umrah is (normally) available year-round: it's a much shorter, less expensive, but spiritually much less significant pilgrimage than Haj.

Then you'd run into the special nature of those first nine days, ending in Eid al Adha, which has a spiritual edge on Eid al Fitr (the end of Ramadan). It's a bad time for sheep, but a major celebration in the islamic world.

Th nine day thing is defined by scripture, so as inviolate as these things can be.

It will be a desperately disappointing time for a lot of people. While many may be able to reschedule for future years, others will have made great efforts to take what they see as a final opportunity to do haj. Still others will have made significant financial sacrifice (it's not a cheap trip), and there'll be additional worries about getting refunds from travel agents who organise things.

Got it. Oh well.

I guess this is also an expensive lesson in the downsides of encoding hard, unchangeable numbers into your operating system before you know what the effects of those numbers will be...

I think those of us waiting, fingers-crossed, for airlines to cancel fights we no longer can use would agree with that sentiment.....

Thatís sort of like saying how about spreading the Fourth of Julyís night of fireworks or a state/county fair over a full month.

It is the way it is:

given that pilgrimages to Mecca have always been about business ó even before Islamís historical founding ó and that the beneficiaries of pilgrimage business ordinarily love the extra money of all that ultra-peak travel period demand;

and given that there have been historical benefits of network effects when it comes to event hosting for a diverse group coming from far away places.

For those for whom hajj doesnít work, umrah is the runner up.
