FlyerTalk Forums - Flight connecting through Dubai with knife

Hi, I am flying from Sydney to London with Emirates, which involves a short change in Dubai airport. I will have a knife with me in my hold luggage and want to check that it's ok to bring it. I've spoken to Emirates, Sydney airport and Dubai airport and have not yet been given any clear information so I am hoping that someone here can help.

Emirates told me: You can take a kitchen knife as checked baggage. The baggage would be subject to security screening at the airport, so it also depends on the airport security authorities if they would permit carriage of sharp items. Check with airport security.

Sydney airport told me: It is fine leaving from Sydney and they think it would be fine, check with Dubai airport.

Dubai airport told me: Concerning your query, we would like to let you know that the main task of Dubai airport security is to inspect and ensure security at every area of Dubai airports and safeguard the well-being of those who are using the airport. The inspectors follow the standards and inspection procedures according to International laws, whereas his/her duty allows him/her to confiscate any item if he/she notices an potential security issue or any item prohibited in the UAE. Therefore, the item in subject has a potential of being confiscated due to the nature of the item and the rules pertaining to Dangerous goods. We would like to request you to kindly be in contact with the respective Airline for further information on the conditions of acceptance of the item. Thereafter, you may contact Dubai Airports security/ Dubai Police department for further assistance and approvals of carriage."

So this has all been a bit circular and I am still not sure. Any help / past experiences from people would be massively appreciated.
