A day in Beirut

I will have a day in Beirut early November and was wandering how to best spend it. I think its probably best to stay within the city and leave the rest of Lebanon for another time. Is there a city tour that is worth joining or is just walking around enough and safe? Im particularly interested in the history of the city and food of course!

Any help is greatly appeciated!! Thanks in advance!

The city is VERY safe if you choose to walk around on your own and folks are friendly and always willing to help in any way they can. If you are planning on taking pictures along your walk, please make sure you don't point your camera at any police and/or military installations that you might encounter along the way (I think that goes without saying) :) Otherwise, for more information, on walking tours of Beirut, please visit the Facebook pages of Alternative Tour Beirut and/or Beirut Urban Tours for set, guided tours of the city. If you choose to walk around on your own, try to make your way (by foot or shared taxi) to the Mathaf (museum) area and visit our National Museum for a TON of information and history on Beirut. Enjoy :)

I spent a weekend there a couple of years ago just walking around the city. The architecture was fascinating . The damage from the civil war that remains was brutal.
